Cloudlink: GUI Shows Wrong Time When NTP Set to Local Due to Browser Timezone

Summary: Customer wants the Cloudlink Cluster (CLC) graphical user interface to display the local time after verifying that the Network Time Protocol (NTP) server is correctly configured in the CLC settings. ...

Symptoms

Observed behavior in Cloudlink GUI

The following issues were reported:

  • GUI displays an unexpected time despite the NTP source being set to local time.
  • NTP server configuration appears correct in the Cloudlink server GUI.
  • Time shown on the Time/Server tab does not reflect the local time.

Cause

Browser Timezone Influence on Cloudlink GUI

When accessing the Cloudlink (CLC) portal over HTTPS, the displayed time is derived from the client browser’s timezone settings rather than the NTP configuration on the server. This behavior causes the GUI to show an unexpected time, which may vary between different browsers.

  • HTTPS connections cause the CLC web interface to rely on the client’s timezone information.
  • Each browser obtains the timezone differently: Chrome can use extensions or its own settings, while Internet Explorer inherits the Windows system timezone.
  • If the browser’s timezone does not match the intended local timezone, the CLC GUI displays an incorrect time despite correct NTP server configuration.

Resolution

Correcting Cloudlink GUI Time Display

Overview

The Cloudlink (CLC) GUI may show an incorrect time when the browser’s time‑zone setting differs from the desired local time. Adjust the browser or operating‑system time‑zone settings to align the GUI display with the configured NTP source.

Step‑by‑Step Workaround

  • Identify the browser used to access CLC.
  • Chrome, Chromium‑based browsers
    1. Open Chrome.
    2. Visit the Change Timezone – Time Shift extension page.
    3. Click **Add to Chrome** and confirm the installation.
    4. After installation, click the extension icon, select the correct time zone from the list, and apply.
    5. Refresh the Cloudlink GUI page (press F5 or click the reload button).
  • Internet Explorer / Microsoft Edge (Legacy)
    1. Open **Control Panel** → **Clock and Region** → **Date and Time**.
    2. Select the **Change time zone…** button.
    3. Choose the correct local time zone and click **OK**.
    4. Close the dialog and restart the browser.
    5. Reload the Cloudlink GUI.
  • Other browsers (Firefox, Safari, etc.)
    1. Adjust the operating‑system time zone (see steps for Windows above or the equivalent on macOS/Linux).
    2. If the browser offers a time‑zone extension, install and configure it to the desired zone.
    3. Clear the browser cache, then reload the Cloudlink GUI.

Verification

  • Log in to the Cloudlink GUI.
  • Navigate to **Time/Server** tab.
  • Confirm that the displayed time matches the local time configured on the NTP server.
  • Optionally, compare the GUI time with the system clock of the client machine.

Additional Resources

Caution: Changing the browser time zone may affect other web applications that rely on the browser’s local time. Verify that the new setting does not disrupt critical workflows.
Warning: Only install extensions from trusted sources. Unverified extensions can pose security risks.
