VxRail: VSAN total storage fluctuates

Summary: VSAN total storage fluctuates between full and lower to no storage.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

VSAN total storage may report that disk space has dropped from expected values to a lower amount. This can cause issues with creating new VMs, backups, and so on. It then will correct and happen again.

Example: a VSAN with 80 TBs may suddenly report 10 TBs or even no space at all.

Cause

VCenter takes regular updates from hosts on available VSAN storage. If a host gets behind on reporting (has asynchronous reporting in this case), it will not make the refresh on vCenter's end. This means it is not calculated in the total space total until later.

Resolution

Restart management services on the vCenter and on all hosts.

Restarting vCenter management services

Restarting host management services

Reboots would also restart management services as well.

Additional Information

It is recommended to mute alerts using VxRail Manager as this will otherwise generate host disconnect Dial Home cases.
