Data Domain: Replacing a Predictive Failure Disk on DD3300

Summary: This article describes how to replace a predictive failure disk on a Data Domain DD3300 appliance.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

  • Disk LED alternates between green and amber.
  • DDOS does not post an alert for the disk failure.
  • Disk state appears normal in DDOS.

Cause

DDOS does not generate alerts for predictive disk failures.
These disks are identified for proactive replacement by the underlying hardware management systems such as iDRAC.

Resolution

Replacement steps for predictive fail hard drive:

  1. Verify the hard drive blinking LED alternates between green and amber.
  2. Collect the TSR logs to confirm the Predictive Failure.
    * Pred Fail (Predictive Failure) occurs in slot 3 similar to the example below.

Predictive Failure occurs in slot 3

  3. Verify that there are no disk reconstructions in progress before proceeding.
  4. Remove the predictive fail hard drive, Wait a few minutes for the system to recognize the disk has been removed.
  5. Insert a new hard drive.
  6. Verify that the disk becomes active and RAID reconstruction automatically starts on the newly inserted hard drive.

Replacement steps for predictive fail on rear SSD:

  1. Verify the SSD health - blinking LED alternates between green and amber.
  2. Collect the TSR logs to confirm the Predictive Failure on SSD rear slot 12.
    Physical Disks section in UI
  1. Shut down the DD3300 appliance (Power Off)
  2. Remove the predictive fail SSD.
  3. Insert a new SSD.
  4. Power on and boot the DD3300.
  5. Verify that the disk LED status is GOOD.

NOTE:

  • No rebuild is required for SSD as it hosts NVRAM emulation and DDVE data cache.
  • Boot time may be longer while the system initializes the new SSD.
