Summary: A memory leak in the LWWIT process causes WERR_GEN_FAILURE errors.

Symptoms

A packet capture shows the following error for "Register" requests using the WITNESS protocol:
2820 2020-10-19 12:32:06.0756  10.1.1.1 → 10.1.1.2 WITNESS 146 Register response, Error: WERR_GEN_FAILURE

LWWIT debug logging shows the following error messages:
20211019103206:DEBUG:0x811b85510:LwWitSrvCheckAuthInfo():witness/server/lwwitd/witness_accesstoken.c:54: Error: STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL = 0xc0000001 (3221225473)]
20211019103206:DEBUG:0x811b85510:WitnessSrvRegister():witness/server/lwwitd/witness_register.c:77: Error: ERROR_GEN_FAILURE (31)

Cause

LWWIT has a memory leak. When the process reaches its limit 1 GB of memory, it is unable to perform any more register operations.

Resolution

The workaround is to restart the LWWIT process on the node experiencing the problem:

# ps p $(pgrep -f "lw-container lwwit"); pkill -2 -f "lw-container lwwit"; sleep 5; ps p $(pgrep -f "lw-container lwwit")

Verify that lwwit restarted with a new pid.

A permanent fix is available in OneFS 9.5 and later.
