PowerEdge: Windows Fire Wall Reset to Public After a Reboot

Summary: The Windows Firewall profile is set to 'Public' instead of 'DomainAuthenticated' (that is domain.com) upon rebooting a server.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

Clients are unable to access the server until the Windows Firewall profile is manually set to 'DomainAuthenticated' using Set-NetConnectionProfile or the Windows Firewall is turned off entirely.

Network Connections list Network X under the name of the network interface card (NIC) instead of domain.com.

Cause

The Network Location Awareness service is started before the Active Directory domain is available.

Resolution

For domain controller, set the Network Location Awareness service to Delayed Start and add a dependency for the Domain Name System (DNS) service.

Note: To run the below commands using PowerShell, you must use the Start-Process cmdlet.

Run the following from CMD as Administrator:
sc config NlaSvc start= delayed-auto
sc config NlaSvc depend= DNS

For Member Servers, set the Network Location Awareness service to Delayed Start (do not modify its dependencies).

Run the following from CMD as Administrator:

sc config NlaSvc start= delayed-auto
Example:
Start-Process sc.exe -ArgumentList "config NlaSvc start= delayed-auto"
Start-Process sc.exe -ArgumentList "sc config NlaSvc depend= DNS" #DC Only
