Symptoms

FLR Failed to determine the partition type on Linux VMs with GPT partitioned with mixture of Linux and Logical Volumes partitions:

Run on the VM guest fdisk -lu and blkid:
fdisk -lu
Disk /dev/sda: 70 GiB, 75161927680 bytes, 146800640 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt
Disk identifier: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxx

Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sda1 2048 4095 2048 1M BIOS boot
/dev/sda2 4096 980991 976896 477M Linux filesystem
/dev/sda3 980992 146798591 145817600 69.5G Linux LVM

Blkid output also shows partitions sda2 and sda3 are Linux File system and Logical Volumes partitions respectively:

blkid
/dev/sda2: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="ext2" PARTUUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx"
/dev/sda3: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="LVM2_member" PARTUUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx"
/dev/mapper/vg00-lvroot: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="ext3"
/dev/mapper/vg00-lvopt: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="ext3"
/dev/mapper/vg00-lvvar: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/mapper/vg00-lvwab: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/mapper/swap: UUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx" TYPE="swap"
/dev/sda1: PARTUUID="xxxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx-xxxx"

Cause

When the disk is partitioned using GPT label, The flr supports only 1 partition type: LVM(s) or Linux Filesystem (s) and does not allow for mixed types of partitions.

When the disk is partitioned using msdos labels, the FLR code will ignore any partition with boot flag and will mount the VM with mixed partitions types successfully.

Resolution

The configuration of mixed GPT partitions is currently not supported for FLR.
