RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines: Dr VM does not start with a missing Operating system error

Summary: During Failover or Test image, Disaster Recovery (DR) Virtual Machine (VM) power on but fail loading the operating system.

Symptoms

During Failover or Test image DR VM power on but fail loading the operating system.
The production VMDK and DR VMDK show different Geometry.
Mounting the disk into a different VM show a healthy FS.
Booting with an operating system recovery disk allow to recover the existing operating system (the method may vary between different operating system), but the VM keeps failing to boot the operating system. 

Cause

The issue is that the problematic VM was created with an older version of VMFS using a different geometry for its disks.

 

Resolution


Workaround:

  • Start a test copy
  • Power off the DR VM
  • Edit the DR VM .vmdk file and modify the parameter below to match the value of the three fields below in the production .vmdk 
ddb.geometry.cylinders 
ddb.geometry.heads 
ddb.geometry.sectors
