Data Domain: Considerations for Implementing ProtectPoint/StorageDirect

Summary: Follow these best practices when configuring primary and protection storage for ProtectPoint/StorageDirect to maximize backup and restore performance.

Instructions

Performance issues during backup or restore can occur if storage groups are configured with a single large LUN. ProtectPoint/StorageDirect uses one data transfer stream per LUN, so fewer LUNs limit throughput.

Apply the following design considerations:

  1. Use Multiple LUNs per Storage Group

    • ProtectPoint/StorageDirect transfers data using one stream per LUN.
    • Example:
      • A 1024 GB storage group configured as one LUN uses a single stream.
      • The same storage group configured as ten 102.4 GB LUNs can achieve up to 10x faster backup and restore performance.
  2. Account for Data Domain Stream Limits

    • Each Data Domain system has a maximum number of read streams.
    • When planning storage groups:
      • Determine how many applications back up or restore concurrently.
      • Ensure the total number of LUNs across all applications does not exceed the Data Domain stream limit.
  3. Optimize for Concurrent Workloads

    • Distribute LUNs across storage groups to balance throughput and avoid bottlenecks.
