Symptoms

If you update the BIOS using SupportAssist or Dell Updates (silent install) and the Inspiron or Vostro shuts down. It boots to the BIOS updater and gets stuck at 1 percent. This only happens when updating to BIOS version 1.8.0.

Affected Systems:

  • Inspiron 5435
  • Inspiron 5635
  • Inspiron 7435 2-in-1
  • Inspiron 7635 2-in-1
  • Vostro 5635

Cause

This is a side effect from enabling the ROM Armor (AMD feature). Boot mode does not update to the BOOT_ON_FLASH_UPDATE while resuming from S4 when ROM Armor is enabled, the PSP keep blocks access for the SPI ROM then causes the system not to update the BIOS.

Resolution

Download the BIOS

The BIOS has been removed from SupportAssist and Dell Update. If you download the BIOS.exe installer from the Dell support website and run the installer, it installs fine.

If your system is stuck at 1 percent, you can recover with the steps below:

Recovery option:

  1. Unplug the AC adapter.
  2. Leave the system on until it powers off.
  3. Plug in the AC adapter and the following warning message should appear.
BIOS Error, Battery Pack is Removed or Less than 10%
  4. Allow the battery to charge more than 10 percent and then press the F1 to continue.
