Symptoms

When trying to backup the configuration, and entering the password in the same command as per below:
 
Switch#: xxxxxxxxx# copy running-config ftp:?
ftp: Enter URL "ftp:[//[username[:password]@]server][/path]"
 
Still get prompted to enter the password again, after it was already included in the command.

For example:
 
MDS1# copy running-config ftp://test:password@xxx.xxx.xxx/MDS1-running-config
331 User name ok, need password
Password:

Resolution

Workaround:

- Use the "terminal password" command to set the password to be used for the password prompts on this terminal session:
 

MDS1# terminal password test
MDS1# copy ftp://test@ftpserver/file bootflash:
Enter vrf (If no input, current vrf 'default' is considered): management
***** Transfer of file Completed Successfully *****
Copy complete, now saving to disk (please wait)...
MDS1#
 
Permanent Fix:

 Fixed in 8.3(0) and above.
