Symptoms

Instances of Versa Operating System boot issues have been reported following abrupt power-off events where an orderly OS shutdown was not performed on VEP14x5 models with SSD firmware version SFDN0N5E.

Cause

Extensive testing has found that a change in the Garbage Collection algorithm of a specific version of SSD firmware has the potential to cause data integrity issues during an abrupt power-off event.

The firmware version SFDN0N5E was introduced into production in June 2021 with prior builds of these SKUs having a firmware version SFDN0N4E

The following SKUs of VEP14x5 ship with the Versa Operating System.

Resolution

On a VEP14x5 with SSD firmware version SFDN0N5E, it is highly recommended to update to version SFDN004E. This can be done using the DLMC2 tool validated to run on Linux based VersaOS and Dell DiagOS. The firmware update can be performed without affecting the data on the disk (non-destructive).

DLMC2b and releases notes are available for download at the following site under Dell Networking VEP14x5 SSD FW Updater. The below files are available within the above download. There are no direct links to these files.

  • Open the End User License Agreement (EULA) file SSD-firmware-updater-eula.pdf and click Accept at the bottom of the page to download.
  • Linux_DLMC2b_SFDN004E_20220315.zip containing the DLMC2 script and binaries. The release notes file vep14x5-rn-firmware-updater_A01_040322.pdf provides the steps to check the current firmware version and perform the update.

A reboot of the VersaOS and a cli functionality test is required prior to running DLCM2 and after running DLMC2. It is recommended to perform the SSD firmware update during a maintenance window.

Future factory builds of these SKUs of VEP14x5 ship with firmware version SFDN004E and a new Dell Part Number.
