Symptoms

The symptoms of the issue are as follows:

  • SQL Server database backups are taken with NetWorker Module for Microsoft (NMM)
  • The Backups are taken at levels full and Logs-only as well cumulative-incremental (known as differential)
  • The problem is with restores of the cumulative-incremental backups.
  • The plugin does not show the source and destination files under "Restore specific files to folder"
  • The plugin does not allow to relocate files to a different path under "Restore all files to folder"
  • The plugin generates a popup error "Please select target path for database and log files."
  • The issue affects multiple versions of SQL Server and NMM version 19.9.0.1 and 19.8.0.x
  • This issue is not dependent on the NetWorker server.
  • The issue does not affect backups of level full or Logs-only.

Cause

The root cause of the issue is a defect in NMM 19.8, 19.9 and versions prior to 19.11.0.1 and 19.10.0.5.

  • The Tracking Defect ID for this issue is:
  • NETWORKER-84935: NMM 19.9 Plugin is not showing the datafile in files or filegroup for cumulative-incremental (differential) backup.
  • The issue only affects backups of level cumulative-incremental.

Resolution

The permanent solution is available in 19.10.0.5+, and 19.11.0.1+

  • See Tracking Defect ID:  NETWORKER-84935: NMM 19.9 Plugin is not showing the datafile in files or filegroup for cumulative-incremental (differential) backup.

The workaround with 19.9 is to use command-line restore for restoring a database to a new database name and new path (relocated).

  • The command-line syntax must be manually typed in the prompt or manually edited into a script for convenience.
  • NOTE.  The script cannot be copied from the plugin because the script button also generates a popup error "Please select target path for database and log files."

An alternate workaround is to use an earlier version of NMM.  For example, NMM version 19.6.x does not have this issue.
