Symptoms

The screen brightness cannot be changed outside of the operating system when switchable graphics have been turned off. This is seen when using either the brightness sliders or the keyboard shortcut in the BIOS. This happens with either battery only or battery and AC adapter. However, the sliders and keyboard shortcut work as intended when switchable graphics are enabled or it is after booting to the operating system.

Note: The brightness in Windows 10 can still be modified using the keyboard shortcuts with switchable graphics enabled or disabled.

Note: This is a limitation of the technology involved. It is not a fault with the laptop. The laptop is working as designed.

Dell has moved to using UEFI mode only in the BIOS. However, the current switchable graphics technology from NVIDIA does not support using the brightness controls outside of the operating system. The graphics output protocol does not support this.
