1 Introduction
This section provides instructions about how to identify available APEX Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift system update paths based on your installed software. You must:
Step 1. Identify your installed software versions, see Section 2.
Step 2. Review the available update paths and select a path, see Section3.
Step 3. Identify the software bundles that must be downloaded from Dell Digital and imported to the systems, based on the selected path, see Section 4.
This section also provides information about how the use the Update Path and Available Software tables in Sections 3 and 4. Some update paths may not be available because of:
- Red Hat OpenShift constraints. Direct updates from one version to another are not always possible.
- Hardware compatibility and issues may impose additional constraints for update paths.
1a. Update Paths
This KB article provides tables to allow you to identify possible update paths based on currently installed versions to determine what paths are available for your system. The paths are limited by:
- Red Hat OpenShift constraints. Direct updates from one version to another are not always possible.
- Dell constraints: Dell only allows updates to the latest version in each y-stream train.
- Hardware compatibility and issues may impose additional constraints for particular update paths.

| Direct Update | This is the simplest update path. It allows customers to move from current releases to the target releases in one hop. |
| Multi-hop Update | There are cases where it is not possible to update from the current release to the target release in one hop. The customer must perform a series of two or more updates to reach their target release. |
| Reimage | There are situations where an update path may be blocked either by Red Hat or Dell due to an issue. Sometimes. an update path that is currently available may be removed once an issue has been discovered in the field. |
1b. Update Path Table
The KB article includes a table that displays the possible update paths. You can locate your currently installed OpenShift release in the first column and can then view the possible OpenShift update paths. The table also includes information about the required APEX Cloud Platform (ACP) Foundation Software and ACP Storage Software. This information is needed for the next step in the process.

APEX Cloud Platform Software Types include:

And for each file type, the detailed information is listed in the tables below.
APEX Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift File
Each OpenShift bundle, identified by the OpenShift version number, is split into multiple parts to make downloads easier. All parts should be downloaded.
Starting from OpenShift Cloud Platform 4.16.z, OpenShift update files are removed from the upgrade bundle. See the latest Upgrade Guide for upgrading OpenShift Cloud Platform.

APEX Cloud Platform Foundation Software File
An ACP Foundation software update release contains three types of bundles: update metadata, update software, and service data; see descriptions below. All three bundles are required. The software bundle may be split into multiple parts to make downloading easier. All parts must be downloaded.

APEX Cloud Platform for Red Hat CoreOS iso file
Starting from OpenShift Cloud Platform 4.16.z, OpenShift update files are removed from the upgrade bundle and a new OpenShift CoreOS zip file is introduced.
This new bundle is used during node expansion.

Starting from OpenShift Cloud Platform 4.17.z, the Red Hat CoreOS iso file is removed from the upgrade bundle.
Critical Software Patches
If a software issue has a high risk of impacting business operations or security, a critical software patch is released. The patch may include Red Hat OpenShift software, Dell APEX Cloud Platform Foundation software or both. Dell strongly recommends that the patch be installed as soon as possible to mitigate any risk, but installation is optional. The contents of any critical patches will be in the next planned patch or feature release.
Once a target update release is selected, the files that are required to perform the update must be downloaded from Dell and imported into the system. Section 1.c provides information about the file types and naming conventions. Large files are split into multiple files to facilitate downloading. All parts must be downloaded.
1d. Required Software Table
After an update path has been selected, use the Required Software Table to determine what software bundles must be downloaded to perform the update.

2 How to Identify Current Software Versions.
Check the current installed ACP Foundation Software version and OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) version on the user interface (UI) before determining update paths.
- Click Dell APEX Cloud Platform and then click Overview.
- In the example below, the ACP version is 03.00.01.00 and the OCP version is 4.13.22.

Red Hat OpenShift 4.17.x supports an acceptable range for the upgrade paths.
Not Recommended Update Paths are updated continuously.
