How to replace the Processor on a PowerEdge R6725

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the Processor and a PE R6725. The procedure will also include removing the System Cover, Heat sink and reinstalling them.

Removal

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Philips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock counterclockwise to the unlock position.
3. Lift the release latch until the system cover slides back.
4. Lift the cover from the system.

Heat sink

1. Identify the heat sink module highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Torx T20 screwdriver, loosen the screws that secure the heat sink in reverse order.
3. Lift the heatsink from the system.
4. Remove the thermal grease on the processor and heat sink by using a thin lint free cloth. (as shown in the video)

Processor

1. Identify the processor highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Torx #T20 screwdriver, loosen the captive screw on the spring loaded retention frame.
3. Hold and rotate the retention frame until it is fully open.
4. Lift the rail frame by gripping the two blue tabs and rotate it upwards to a vertical position.
5. Slide the carrier frame with the processor out from the rail frame by holding the green tab.

Install

Processor

1. Identify the processor location highlighted in blue.
2. Insert the carrier frame with the processor into the rail frame until the carrier frame clicks into place with the rail frame.
3. Close the rail frame down and press the blue tabs to click into place.
4. Rotate and close the retention frame to secure the rail frame.
5. Using a Torx T20 screwdriver, tighten the captive screw on the spring-loaded retention frame.

Heat sink

1. Identify the heat sink module location highlighted in blue.
2. Apply the grease in a thin spiral on top of the processor.
3. Align the heat sink with the guide pins and then place the heat sink module on the processor socket.
4. Using a Torx T20 screwdriver, tighten the screws that secure the heat sink. Tighten them in order. Do not overtighten.

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the tabs on the system cover with the guide slots on the system, and slide the system cover.
3. Close the system cover release latch.
4. Using a Philips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock clockwise to the locked position.
