How to replace the Serial module on a Optiplex SFFPlus 7020

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the Serial module on a Optiplex SFFPlus 7020. The procedure will also include removing the Side Cover, Front bezel, Hard drive assembly, Disk drive cage, Processor fan and heat sink assembly and reinstalling them.

Removal

Side Cover

1. Identify the side cover highlighted in blue.
2. Slide the release latch until your hear a click.
3. Slide the side cover towards the back of the computer and lift it from the system.

Front bezel

1. Identify the front bezel highlighted in blue.
2. Gently pry and release the front bezel tabs sequentially from the top.
3. Rotate the front bezel outward from the chassis and remove the front bezel.

Hard drive assembly

Disk drive cage

1. Identify the disk drive cage highlighted in blue.
2. Move the lock handle to unlock the disk drive cage and detach it from the chassis.
3. Lift the disk drive and detach it from the mounting points on the chassis.
4. Rotate the drive cage and place it on the chassis.
5. Lift the disk drive cage away from the computer.

Processor fan and heat sink assembly

1. Identify the processor fan and heat sink assembly highlighted in blue.
2. Disconnect the processor fan cable from the connector on the system board.
3. Loosen the captive screws that secure the processor fan and heat sink assembly to the system board. Loosen in reverse order.
4. Lift the processor fan and heat sink assembly off the system board.
5. Use the alcohol pad to clean the heatsink (as shown in the video).

Serial module

1. Identify the serial module highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the cross type screws that secure the serial module to the chassis.
3. Disconnect the serial module cable from the connector on the system board.
4. Slide the serial module off the chassis.

Install

Serial module

1. Identify the serial module location highlighted in blue.
2. Insert the serial module into the slot on the chassis.
3. Connect the serial module cable to the connector (KB_MS_SERIAL) on the system board
4. Install the cross type screws to secure the serial module to the chassis.

Processor fan and heat sink assembly

1. Identify the processor fan and heat sink assembly location highlighted in blue.
2. Apply a pea sized amount of thermal material as shown.
3. Place the processor fan and heat sink assembly on the system board and align the screw holes.
4. Tighten the four captive screws that secure the heat stink to the system board. Tighten in order.
5. Connect the processor fan cable to the connector on the system board.

Disk drive cage

1. Identify the disk drive cage location highlighted in blue.
2. Place the disk drive cage upside down on the chassis.
3. Connect the data and power cable to the connectors on the optical drive.
4. Hold the disk drive cage upright and align with its mounting points with the slots on the chassis.
5. Align the screw hole on the cage with the screw hole on the chassis.
6. Move the lock handle to lock the disk drive cage in place.
7. Route the power and data cables through the routing guide on the disk drive cage.

Hard drive assembly

Front bezel

1. Identify the front bezel location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the front cover tabs with the slots on the chassis.
3. Rotate the front cover towards the chassis and snap it into place.

Side Cover

1. Identify the side cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Slide the side cover towards the front of the computer until you hear the release latch click.
