Beyond Tape Storage for Enhanced Protection

Dell helps organizations of all sizes create customized backup and recovery strategies that not only protect information, but also speed recovery times and minimize business interruption. Our products and services cover a broad recovery continuum—from simple tape backup and recovery to disk backup and advanced multi-site replication—to provide the right level of protection and accessibility.

Disk-to-Disk Backup or Backup to Disk (B2D)
Using disk backup to supplement tape backup can accelerate backup and recovery times. Dell helps many organizations improve restore processes by keeping short-term backups onsite, online and on-disk, and using tape backup for long-term and off-site archives.

Understanding Replication
Replication creates identical sets of data to accurately protect information or make it more accessible throughout an organization. Dell can help you choose the replication methods that can best meet your organization’s operational objectives.

Copies: bit-for-bit replicas used to move data from one array to another or for distribution of data for use by multiple servers.

Snaps (or Snapshots) : point-in-time replicas used to allow access to data for parallel processing, particularly for backups, software development and testing, data mining and reporting.

Clones : bit-for-bit replicas of data used to recover from corruption of data due to viruses, hardware failure, malicious intent and human error.

Mirrors: byte level replicas of data between two or more sites used to handle high demand and help improve availability of the original site, backup and distribute data to remote sites, and recover from major disasters such as fires, storms and floods.

Dell offers two methods of mirroring:
  • Synchronous: near-continuous, real-time updates between sites up to 200km apart
  • Asynchronous: scheduled, periodic updates between sites almost anywhere in the world
