Invitation
We invite design students and individuals to create a broad range of design concepts and innovations for technology products that demonstrate refreshed approaches and responsible solutions for green computing technologies.
Our goal is to facilitate an open exchange among all peoples of the Earth and contribute to the body of knowledge that advances the practice of environmentally responsible product design for current and future computing technology products.
ReGeneration
What does it mean to be a truly green product when thinking about computing technology? Considering the global scale of computing, this is a big question, the answer to which can make a big difference in improving the Earth’s environment that we all share.
In the spirit of ReGeneration, this competition invites you to rethink what it means to be a truly environmentally responsible computing technology product. With your participation, and through this design competition, we hope to begin a new dialogue, refresh awareness, and explore new directions in sustainable, environmentally responsible product designs for computing.
Spirit of the Competition
Our focus is on the professional work space and life style that surrounds the use of computers. This focus spans from the personal computers used by individuals at home or on the go, to computer systems used by professionals at work, and the entire infrastructure supporting corporate computing deployment.
As we understand more about a product’s entire life cycle, from concept through end of life, we become better equipped to design products that lessen the impact on the environment and still provide the necessary functionality. Furthermore, through better design process tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) we can design computer products that are more sensitive to the total carbon footprint they generate. It’s a big task, with many trade-offs and contradictions. For example, we know that recycling promotes resource recovery, but recycling processes require significant amounts of energy for transportation and processing.
The spirit of this competition, therefore, is to invigorate the academic and industry dialogue regarding product designs for environmentally responsible green computing. We want to flush out any standing contradictions that may exist to more fully understand tradeoffs and prioritizations for green computing product design and then share that understanding for the benefit of all.
For this reason, we will present the entries to the public through our website and press events. In that same spirit, the organizers will not claim rights to the intellectual property of the entries, so all entrants should know that their submissions will be made public. Please read the full Official Rules for complete details. This is a professionally and independently juried competition.
“...we’re living in the ReGeneration, which includes people of all ages throughout the world who want to make a difference in improving the Earth we all share.”
