Product Energy Efficiency

Dell maintains ongoing dedication to designing technologies with both greater efficiency and enhanced performance. Our commitment to developing energy-saving products such as the 9G line of servers and OptiPlex desktops are examples of Dell’s leadership and innovation.

Dell Energy Efficiency

New Generation of Server Efficiency
Targeting server power efficiency continues to be one of Dell's primary design objectives. The latest Dell PowerEdgeTM  Servers consume up to 25% less energy than previous generations. When combined with impressive performance gains, this results in up to a 3X increase in performance per watt over previous generations. Dell also works closely with its industry partnerships and alliances to bring to market new energy efficient technologies such as:

  • High efficiency power supplies; reducing wasted power at lower workloads
  • Variable speed temperature controlled fan technology; allowing fans to spin at reduced speed when environment allows
  • Small form factor hard drives; saving up to 7 watts per drive over larger 3.5" units
  • Low Voltage processors with power management tools; allowing operating systems to dial down power draw during non-peak times

Dell Energy Efficiency

Thermally Optimized
Dell’s versatile OptiPlex line of performance desktops were built with energy efficiency in mind. Innovations designed into the OptiPlex series, when configured with Intel®  CoreTM  2 Duo processors and flat panel displays, allows the OptiPlex 745 to use up to 70%* less power than previous generations of OptiPlex desktops, dramatically cutting consumption down.

  • With our new Energy Smart configuration, OptiPlex default power settings exceed the worldwide mutually recognized Energy Star standard, which means that each desktop is designed to further reduce power consumption and energy costs, right out of the box.
  • Innovative BTX chassis is designed specifically for thermal effectiveness, maximizing the OptiPlex’s internal HyperCoolTM  fan’s performance.
  • Power Factor Correcting power supply and motherboard uses significantly less energy to maintain ideal, cooler internal operating temperatures.

Dell Energy Efficiency

Current Dell Latitude laptops consume up to 70% less energy on average than the previous generation OptiPlex GX620*.The energy saved results in a reduction of pollution to the environment. In addition, every 1000 units of Latitude laptops installed instead of the Opti GX620 helps reduce CO2 omission by approximately 1 million lbs*. Dell Latitude laptops are designed with the environment in mind.

  • Dell Latitude laptops meet or exceed the worldwide mutually recognized Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star standard. Dell has taken the extra step of reducing the amount of time before entering low-power mode to help save more energy, from the 30 minutes required by EPA for Energy Star compliance, to 15 minutes.
  • Dell Latitude laptops’ external power supplies are designed to meet the new Energy Star program requirements.
  • Dell Latitude Quickset software has an easy-to-use Power Management wizard, assisting user to control and optimize laptop's power usage. The user can control settings that reduce power to system components or to the computer itself when not in use.

Dell – Energy Smart Innovation and Practice

Dell recognizes the role that product design plays in our global responsibility toward climate stewardship. We are focused on implementing features that reduce the energy required to operate our products, as well as educating customers about the importance of using these features. Dell’s pioneering direct business model optimizes manufacturing and distribution efficiencies, resulting in lower cost-of-ownership through good environmental practices.

Dell offers many products that meet or exceed the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for Energy Star®  qualification, and is a leader in the EPA’s Million Monitor Drive, installing a default 20 minute sleep-state power management feature for monitors on over 60,000 systems, with an estimated global energy savings of 5,551,180 kWh/yr since 2001 – enough energy to power the electricity in over 4000 American homes for a year. It is Dell’s company policy that all internal systems are operated with this feature in place.

"As an Energy Star partner, Dell has significantly advanced the area of computer energy efficiency and heightened awareness of the importance of Energy Star. By participating in Energy Star, Dell is showing businesses worldwide that protecting the environment is also good for the bottom line." Kathleen Hogan, Director, USEPA Climate Protection Partnerships Division

Dell promotes environmentally-focused educational programs within the public and private sectors, and partners with government, industry and citizen-based organizations to find ways to continue to enhance product efficiency and environmental performance. In 2003 Dell launched the Energy Management Solutions Center online to educate consumers on efficiency in PC usage, and our Power Calculators help customers optimize energy and thermal efficiencies, and this year we became a founding sponsor of the pioneering Green Grid, an organization seeking to lower the overall consumption of power in datacenters around the globe.
