Dell Migrate User's Guide

Troubleshooting network disconnect issues during migration

When both the old and the new PCs are paired and the network disconnects, you must connect the PCs to the same network that was used during the initial pairing. If you want to use a different network, for example. LAN or a different WiFi network, you must restart the migration on both the old and the new PCs. Always connect your PCs to a network that you recognize and trust. Ensure that you do not use open or unsecured networks such as in airports or coffee shops.

If you have a LAN cable, you can connect both the old and the new PCs directly using a LAN cable for fastest speeds. Newer versions like Cat 5, Cat 6, and Cat 7, and so on, provide better speeds.

For WiFi networks, use 5G or 5 GHz versions of networks when available for better speeds.

After both the old and the new PCs are connected to each other, Migrate runs the prechecks and identifies data on the old PC available for migration to the new PC.

During this process, there might be a network drop, which can occur due to one of the following reasons:

  • Turned off WiFi either on the old PC or the new PC or both.
  • Turned off PC, laptop, or desktop.
  • Connected to VPN.
  • Turned off modem or router.
  • Removed the LAN connection from PC or laptop or desktop.
  • Weak signal strength.
  • Anti-virus software blocking the connection.
