R710 - cannot find "SR-IOV Global Enable"

Hi,

I just get another R710 Server for scientic purpose.

I installed all new availabe Firmware and Updates. However I still cannot find the "SR-IOV Global Enable" Option in BIOS. Does anyone has another hint, what I can do to get SR-IOV running.

I checked "lspci" and "lshw" commands (compared with another R710 Server, where SR-IOV is working).

I only found a Delta concerning the Mainboard product label:

sr-iov working server: mainboard product label: 0MD99X

sr-iov not available option server: mainboard product label: 0M233H

Please help.

Thanks in Advance

Viktor

Hi Viktor,

Thanks for the post.

You can refer the below link which has detailed steps to get SR-IOV Global Enabled.

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/w/wiki/3921.enabling-sr-iov-technology-on-delltm-poweredgetm-servers.aspx

I will also mention the steps to be followed. For additional information you can refer the above link.

The steps are as follows:

1) Update the BIOS to the latest version.

PowerEdge BIOS version released after June 20th 2012 has SR-IOV support. You can find minimum BIOS version needed on different Dell server platforms. Obtain the latest BIOS from http://support.dell.com.

2) Enable the “Virtualization Technology” setting.

  • Restart the server.
  • During BIOS POST when the “DELL” screen displays, press F2 to enter System Setup.
  • Go to Processor Settings > Virtualization Technology and change the Virtualization Technology setting to Enabled.

3)  Enable the “SR-IOV Global Enable” setting.

  • Go to Settings > Integrated devices and change the "SR-IOV Global Enable" setting to "Enabled".

Please let me know if you have any concern,

Thanks

Thanks for your post

I just looked at this Link:

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/w/wiki/3921.enabling-sr-iov-technology-on-delltm-poweredgetm-servers.aspx

and I think I found the answer.

If I compare the iDRAC Output of my servers, so I get for the SR-IOV working R710 servers:

System Revision II

The new R710 servers (all firmware and updates are complete new), where I cannot find the "SR-IOV Global Enabled" Option in the BIOS (v6.4.0) are marked as:

System Revision I

Is this the Reason, why it does not work?

Is there any possibility to get it work?

Best Regards

Viktor

Hi Victor,

Could you please let me know, whether you are getting the "SR-IOV Global Enable" option after pressing F2 and going to the below mentioned location:

Integrated devices -> SR-IOV Global Enable

Also is the "Virtualisation Technology" option enabled in:

Processor Settings > Virtualisation Technology

Thanks

Hi,

The "Virtualisation Technology" Option is available in "Processor Settings" and is set on True/Enabled.

However I do not find the "SR-IOV Global Enable" Option in "Integrated Devices". It should be the last option in this settings area, but it is not there.

Best Regards

Hello Ah_Elaraby,

Did you first change Processor Settings > Virtualization Technology and change the Virtualization Technology setting to Enabled

Have you scrolled to the bottom of the Integrated Devices setting window: BIOS Settings > Integrated devices >

Please let me know your:

System model and is it generation II?

BIOS version?

What NIC do you have?

Below is a list of Dell 11th Generation platforms that support the SR-IOV feature:

R910

The following platforms are also supported and must be an 11G Generation II server:

T410, R410, R510, R610, T610, R710, T710

How to identify an 11G Generation II system:

These servers will be physically marked with symbol "II" on the Express service tag.  The Express service tag is located in front panel of the system.

These systems support Intel 56XX (Westmere) processors.

The System Revision Field in the iDRAC GUI will have "II"

 Supported SR-IOV network cards:

Intel X520 10GB Ethernet adapters

Intel X540 10GB Ethernet adapters
