Area 51 r2 - installing r4 MoBo???
I havent investigated this in great detail - but thinking of future upgrades I am wondering if it is possible if one was somehow able to get the r4 MoBo (X299) you could do a relatively straight forward swap out? (cpu/cooler/ram etc) Or if the PSU connections and Front IO connections are not compatible, thus making it a more problematic task and would not have a benefit over swapping out for another MoBo.

Yes, I think a R3/R4 motherboard will be easy swap into Area51-R2 case (and use it's existing PowerSupply and MIO-Board, etc.)
I think a R5/R6 motherboard will only "easily install" into the new Area51 "Gen 2.0" case. Among other things, I heard it has a new MIO-Board.
Watch your Windows License. Not sure about Dell/Alienware, but I know some (like Lenovo) don't have keys embedded in their "repair/replacement motherboard parts". Just a heads up.
That's all I got. BTW, I can't really help with motherboard swaps in a forum ... and especially when swapping to something other than exact replacement of shipped.
