Aurora R10, 1000W PSU, 8 pin EPS connector

So I have been looking at my motherboard, to determine if in the future I can move over the power supply to a different case and motherboard.

Now I noticed the 8 pin EPS connector that provide extra power to the board, only has 6 wires connected to it.

It's connected to an 8 pin socket, but only 3 x 12 Volt is supplied. 3 yellow, 3 black. Should be 4 yellow, 4 black.

Pretty disappointed, looks like I will have to purchase a 1000 Watt PSU because the included power cables to the modular power supply are not populated to the ATX 2.0 standard, but instead to a DELL OEM sub standard.

Aurora models (R5 & newer) share the same PSU (&/or PSU pinout = can share cables) with Area-51 models (R2 & newer), where the 850watt Bronze/Gold, 1000w & 1500w PSU all have the same front panel layout & same front panel pinout, making both the PSU chassis & PSU case cables all interchangeable (however we might question if the 1500w should/could/would fit the Aurora due to its length)

My reaction to the 6-wire 6pin Aurora CPU cable is that Dellware 'cost-cut' the cable in an effort not to pay for heatshrink, more zipties, & of course the 2 wires, 4 PSU female terminals & extra red 6pin connector; sad but maybe true that 5950x / 10900k can't get x8 wires to power those with

Possible remedies below:

1) If you can find 51 R2 J8JFX CPU/GPU cable (google/eBay/call-chat w/Dell Spare Parts), u can use it

2) You can buy some yellow/black 18awg wire, buy some female PSU terminals & a 6pin (red) connector & add the extra 2 wires yourself (ie take the original cable apart, insert wires/terminals, put cable back together etc) (see ***Note)

3) Contact a custom cable maker ('sleevers'), send them yours, have them make it into an 8pin

3A) Contact custom cable-maker / sleever, who can make an 8-wire 8pin (4+4 etc) that has x2 6pin modular connex made from scratch (see pinout below)

4) Buy a basic CPU 8pin cable from someone, buy a pair of empty 6pin connectors > remove the unwanted 8pin it will come with (in otherwords, back all of the terminals out of the 8pin PSU end of cable & transfer on your 6pins which will plug into PSU panel red ports) ie create your own compatible CPU cable. Whether u source an all-black cable or a black-yellow is up to u

***Note: typical aftermarket CPU cables range in length from 24" - 26" - 29.5" … if the Aurora CPU cable is shorter than 24", you might need an 8pin CPU / EPS extension for it (I don't have the cable length for J8JFX, but it should be 24"+ from what I remember)

Also note I can not get into cable making tips / advice, I don't have the time. However, in 15minutes or so, someone could add the needed 2 wires & extra red 6pin connector so it's a proper CPU cable

CPU is Not GPU

You need an EPS12v supply that is PFC and 80 percent efficient.

PFC 80 plus

Some vendors Combined power for 3.3v/5v Rails is Less than sufficient on Their 600W to 1200W PSU. Dell has 30 and 32 amps with 225W combined for those rails even on 875W unit.  Smallest value for this Rail is 142W for the Dell 460W power supply.

1000W units that do not have 220W combined for 3.3v 5v rail also do not meet spec. So choose wisely. Even Dell 875W unit reserves 225W for this rail set. 32 AMPS and 30 AMPS  not 90 to 130W 20 amps 25 amps.

Note Changes in EPS12v Spec 2.9.X

Note Seasonic Focus GX series NONE of them are ATX12v or EPS12v spec as far as the 3.3v/5v rails combined.  Power supplies are not a single rail nor a single spec of WATTS.

So basically a power supply that does not conform to the ATX 2.0 standard.

I am going to save myself the headache in the long run and get another PSU when I transplant this system into another case.

It's just not worth the hassle of making custom connectors in order to get this to work with anything else besides Dell Alienware hardware.

ATX has 4 pin  EPS12V has 4 + 4 pin

They do this so you wont confuse the 6+2 and plug into the motherboard. number of pins is not how you identify a standard.

yes, that is great. But like I was saying, the DELL EPS 12 volt plug only has 6 of the 8 pins enabled on my 1000 Watt PSU. Because of that I cannot use it in another build, since other motherboards need the full EPS connector. (4 yellow's, 4 blacks).

The supplied PSU cable from DELL has 3 yellow, 3 black, so it does not confirm to the ATX standard.

Its been over 20 years since ATX.

8 Pin Motherboard Connector is EPS12v specification Nothing whatsoever to do with INTEL

ATX standard.

Dell does not design to Standards they make their own.

It had 4 pin and 20 pin not 8 pin and 24 pin.

Page 20 of the ATX 2.2 standard has a 24 pin connector. That is the standard I was talking about.

The EPS 12 volt 8 pin connector is also a standard, part of a sub standard based on ATX 2.2 standard.

The DELL EPS 12 volt 8 pin connector does not comply with the EPS standard, and has only 6 out of the 8 pins used. I am not aware of Dell having a design standard for PSU's. A standard would typically be governed and approved by a regulatory board.

What I can see is Dell using their own customized setup. But that does not make it a standard.

Yeah, you're right you go buy an aftermarket EVGA, Seasonic, Super Flower, Corsair, etc. PSU and you're not going to find an 8 PIN 6 wire EPS 12V cable connector in the box. 

Keep in mind Dell gets these PSUs custom made for Dell systems.  They pay for what they need in their systems.  If Dell were purchasing these PSU's to resell as aftermarket standalone components then sure it would make sense to include all the bells and whistles.  But when you're buying something for one specific purpose then why pay for more than what you need?  Dell is in the business of selling computers, not power supplies.  I'm sure HP, Lenovo, Acer, they all do the same. Yeah, it's no good if you want to build your own PC, but that wasn't the intended design either.

I get that, but the problem is it does not confirm to the standard.

Not confirming to a standard will also cost money, because now every 8 pin EPS has to be custom wired for DELL applications by the OEM. It's still an 8 pin, with an 8 pin mating connector. Just missing 2 wires.

Whoever the OEM is for the PSU now has to make a special cable for DELL, keep special DELL components in stock etc... That all costs money.

On top of that, when you purchase this system it does not specifically state you are buying a PSU that does "mostly but not always" confirm to the industry standard. You assume it does, only to find out later your shiny 1000 Watt PSU is all of a sudden useless for any future projects because of the cabling choices DELL made. Not because it is a bad power supply.

6wired 8pin cables are nothing special 

Choosing between a 6 wired and 8 wired is probably related to Dell motherboard design that has run on 4pin connectors for CPU until recently.

So basically, Dell should spend more money confirming to standards and sourcing reuseable parts?

From what I have seen over the years, Dell seem to optimise their stock from system to system, selling 2-3 versions at any point in time and reusing stock from one system to another. This may limit deploying the latest technology, but that is intentional and their objective is by no means to compete with the Overclocking world.

They are building Alienwares for the gaming consumer market, not for overclockers and/or miners.

If you integrate immediately the latest of everything, your business will fail as your support costs will push you out of the competitive market, being at the tip of technology costs more than it gives.

8 wire EPS connectors have been around for years. They are nothing special.

I have never heard of a 6 pin EPS connector. 8 pin, 4 pin, 4+4 pin, 2 x 4+4 pin yes.

 

Like I said, lesson learned. First and last Alienware I am buying.

I am thinking the project will be in May, since that is my birthday month.

For cases I really like the idea of the Prism-S form Rosewill. I like the 3 bottom 120 mm intake air fans and the vertical radiator mounting option.

It's compact, yet good air flow and nice looking.

 

For motherboard Strix B550-F, although I might go with an MSI board as I have good experiences with them also.

Cooling 240 mm rad, thinking Deepcool Gammax with the blue LED fans. 

 

Power supply Evga 850 Watt. Will port the RTX 3080 AMD 3700X over from the Alienware together with the OEM Samsung Nvme drive. I really like the Thermaltake Toughpower iRGB plus 850 Watt PSU that has all the software readouts available, but they are to pricy for my liking.
