Aurora R11, do I need to change Bios if I upgrade RAM?
Hey, friendly folks from the community
I am planning to get the newly released Aurora R11 desktop. Got a quick question about whether I need to change the BIOS or anything else if I pick the `8GB HyperX™ FURY DDR4 XMP at 2933MHz` and buy the HyperX Fury 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 CL 16 DIMM (Kit of 2) Black XMP from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WJJJ5M6/ref=twister_B07WNN8TJ5?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 to upgrade?
Also, could anyone with this sort of experience shed some light on whether I would lose the 1-year warranty from Dell by opening the chassis myself?
Additional information about the configuration is provided in case it is useful.
CPU: 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10700K
GPU: Liquid Cooled NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2080 Super
Chassis: Lunar Light chassis with High-Performance CPU Liquid Cooling and 1000W Power Supply
Hard Drive: 2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
I am pretty new to desktop configuration, so any suggestion/information is appreciated

It would just be F2 on startup, performance options, and then a drop down menu to disable XMP, or select one of the two profiles. One of the profiles would have the 3200mhz. If it is disabled it may run at 2933, if you bought the 3200 sticks. If you got 2933, then disabled it would probably run at 2666. Based on past experiences, that is probably the only selections you will be able to make in BIOs.

@r72019thank you! your tip made my non-Dell 2nd module work xD I put one stick on each channel and run BIOS (before I only did the testing for quite some hours). Even though my XMP was already disabled and I didn't find any profiles on the BIOS...(so didn't change any BIOS settings at the end) The only issue is that now the memory speed is overall down to 2400 Mhz, but I have 32 GB and my PC is booting up ok now, no blinking.

The price of RAM at Dell is not great. To get 32G I need to add $300, with that I could get 64G of the same model.
Besides, adding RAM is straightforward enough even for newbies like me.

Thanks for the reply, I surely will share some photos when the desktop arrives. But that is not going to be any time soon though based on the delivery estimates. Also, still waiting for the WIFI-6 to be available, asked a sales representative yesterday about the expected timeline, the answer is soon.
Cannot wait!

As far as changing bios, the options you would select from most likely are limited to xmp1, xmp2, and disabled, and you can update that via AwCC in windows (requires restart).

Yea Dell charges a large markup on RAM.

Thanks for the reply!
Could you be more specific about what changes I need to make on BIOS? Do I just need to change the frequency from 2933MHz to 3200MHz?

I actually got a follow-up question about your reply.
After reading the explanation from the HyperX website,
"HyperX Plug N Play memory will run in DDR4 systems up to the speed allowed by the manufacturer’s system BIOS. PnP cannot increase the system memory speed faster than is allowed by the manufacturer’s BIOS. HyperX Plug N Play DDR4 products support XMP 2.0 specifications so overclocking can also be achieved by enabling the built-in XMP Profile."
I am a bit confused now. According to R11 specification, the upper limit of frequency is 3200 MHz, and if the 32G memory card in the link could support Plug N Play allowed up to the speed of the manufacturer's system BIOS, that should mean I do not need to change anything on BIOS after plugging in the 32G 3200MHz memory card

You can try it and see what happens, if it doesn't show then enable XMP. The default on the OEM HyperX sold by Dell is to get the OC speed, you enable one of the canned extreme memory profiles. That "up to" language is just telling you that if you buy 3600 RAM, you're not going to get 3600 mhz if the board only supports 3200. It will instead go up to 3200 in that scenario. It's not saying it will automatically always run at 3600 (or whatever the board maximum is). I've seen many instances where for example you get 3600 RAM, a board supporting 3200, and it reads as 2666, for example.

Hello, I actually have a question similar to this as well. I got 16gb 3200 when I bought this unit. I added 16gb 3200 hyperX from amazon. It ended up bricking my computer. 4 yellow flashes. Pulled ram out, and it works fine. Do I need to remove the dell spec ram and replace it all with new? Or is there a profile selection (XMP 1, or 2) that I can select that will allow the ram to work together. Didn’t want to start messing with settings until I have a better answer. Thanks!

You have mismatched RAM. You can't run oem + amazon hyperx with xmp because the profiles are different. Disable xmp and then stick the oem in black, amazon in white. If that won't work then you need to buy a matched kit which you can then run in dual channel mode with xmp (if available). And toss/sell the oem ram.

Okay, That is what I needed to know. I wanted to check before I purchased more Ram if that would work. Do you know which XMP profile will run at 3200? I assume XMP 2. Or do you know a way to view what profile is which? Thanks for the help.

for me it is XMP1. I have replaced the built in RAM with Hyper X Fury from aftermarket.

I came across these 32gb kits and ordered 2 of them today. I have no idea if they will work in my R11 or not but Amazon’s easy returns made me pull the trigger. 64GB for about $200 with the sales tax.
