Aurora-R7, scan failed forced windows reinstall

I have an Aurora r7. It is only about two months old. The first time this happened, it was about a month ago. Now it has happened again. I just turned on the PC and, it immediately started scanning to repair. Then it finally shows the screen that tells me it can't repair and I must restore or reinstall windows. I can't do anything else. Like I said this is the second time this has happened and it's only two months old. This is the gaming computer. All major web browsing is down on my other PC. I'm not happy with my first and possibly only Alienware experience. What's going on?

I haven't been anywhere near the Bios. It also won't boot up. Just says the scan could not fix the problem and only let's me reinstall windows. I haven't done that this time. The first time I did reinstall and thought all was well. I turned the PC on this morning and it went into scanning for some reason. I will try again when I get home from work.

Just for info.: I have an external hard drive that worked fine on the other PC, a Blue snowball mic and a Logitech cam connected. But I had no problems on the windows 7 pc.

Thanks for the response.

Did you mess with the bios?

Sounds like your boot drive might have been changed or something.

I would go into bios and make sure your windows operating system is identified as the main boot priority #1, and the you are under uefi settings.

If everything checks out there, it's possible your main storage drive is pooched and needs replacing.

If I was you, and I was eventually able to get into windows, I would backup all the files I felt necessary and request a main drive replacement.

Did you perform a bios update or any sort of update provided by support assist prior to the issue? I know that bios update can mess up the boot priority. Had it happen myself. It would result in a simple setting change in your bios to get your pc up and running again.

I was thinking about that as I was reading some of the other posts. I just have to figure out how to get in the bios and then figure out what I'm look for to change. I only know enough to get into trouble by myself. That's why I don't mess with the bios.

The thing that has me concerned is, this happened about a month after I got the R7. And now it's happening again.

Ok, just checked my R7. Yes, I did update the bios. It is the newest update. And when I came out of the bios, it tried to restart. The ran diagnostics. Then tried to repair. Now I have the blue screen saying auto repair couldn't repair my PC. Smh

I have had similar situations which required multiple clean installs a few weeks apart. Please let me know if you find anything that works for you. Thank you.

Tellin ya buddy.

The bios update just messed with your boot sequence.

You simply just need to go back into bios and set your OS drive as the #1 boot priority and make sure you are on uefi settings. It will reset and run without an issue hopefully.

The OS was set to #1, and it was on UEFi.. Still would not work. The tech had me check that first. I will give the fix a shot. In about three to six weeks I will know if it worked or not.

What I did, was set it wrong and under legacy first, knowing it wouldn't boot properly. When I went back in, and set it properly, it worked. Give it a shot?

One of those things...like smacking your vcr if it wasn't running properly (for us old guys).

Something happened when I set all messed up and set it back again. I did feel I got lucky...and I hope this is your case as well buddy.

Dells bios updates are not cool at all, and they are a real threat to bricking your system. It's insane!

Thanks my friend. I will do that tonight when I get home. I will be keeping a copy of this in my desk just in case it does happen again.

I also will not be downloading another Bios update when I first get the notification .I will wait to see what others say.

Good luck man. Try to unplug the power from the wall as well for a few minutes before trying this.

I know it all sounds ridiculous, but what other options do you have right?

Typically bios updates don't brick systems very easy (outside Dell and Alienware), it's not super common. I also believe that these "bricks" we get on our Alienware systems after a bios update...are not being treated seriously enough. I feel that Dell is quick to say "need a mobo exchange" rather than actually entertaining other less extreme options. That was my case anyway.

I will find out in about a month if this worked or not. The tech installed about 12 to 15 patches that he said were not installed at the factory.

I have even done what PentatonicSteel suggested. So, if this all doesn't work I will definitely be asking for a new hard drive.

Sorry to hear that buddy.

New storage drive seems to be the most logical outcome at this point.

Hope you get the system up and running real soon!
