Aurora R8, 2080 TI constant emergency fan mode

Well, I'm back. I'm the unlucky owner of an Aurora R8 with 2080 TI FE. That card has been replaced twice already:

I'm now on my 3rd one, which is a refurbished one. I've not had any issues with this 3rd card for 7 months, but this week a new problem introduced itself. It's not the "space invader" problem, instead something different:

Since about one week, I basically can't put any load on this card. The video demonstrates BFV. All this time, I had been playing it just fine at high or ultra settings, with a FPS easily achieving 110-120 without the card breaking much of a sweat.

Now, every 20-30 seconds, the fans go into some emergency cooling mode that is so loud that I can't even hear the game anymore.

Clearly, this card is very rapidly running hot. From Windows, it's already at 43C. A minute or so into the game, it's getting into 80-85C territory. It would probably go much higher, yet that's when the crazy fan mode cools it down for a few seconds, the card heats up again, fan goes crazy again, and so it endlessly repeats. During the brief cool down, FPS rises, then the card heats up, and it sinks.

To emphasize, this is not some normal high fan speed, it's crazy mode, like a jet engine.

I'm running everything as vanilla as can be. No overclocking, no custom profiles. I'm on the latest driver. I tried lowering the graphics settings of games, it has zero effects. I tried different power/thermal plans in Alienware Command Center, makes no difference either.

This behavior is entirely new, I've not had it for 7 months yet now it is unavoidable. Games are unplayable this way due to the insane noise and the anxiety of this card being destroyed.

What can possibly cause this sudden wildly different temperature behavior? I've not changed a thing this whole time.

Do you know what the fan RPM is right before it goes into airplane mode?  Perhaps it may help to use MSI afterburner to set up a custom, more aggressive, fan profile to try and prevent the GPU from overheating so quickly.  You can also see if it helps temporarily disabling the boost clock and running it at stock clocks.

Here's an update after further troubleshooting.

Just after posting my message here, I used Dell's SupportAssist to update all pending driver updates on the system, including a BIOS update, which is now at its latest version: 1.0.9.

Next, Dell asked me to run this benchmark:

I ran it in both high and ultra mode, scores: 3875/3876. During the entire benchmark, I did not get any crazy fan modes, the temp was high (84C) yet rock steady during the process. Average FPS was 153.

As I did not run this benchmark before the BIOS update, I have no way of knowing whether anything meaningful has changed. Would it burst into emergency fan mode before the BIOS update? I don't know. So I did some additional testing...

BFV, in my normal settings...

  • High or ultra
  • DX12
  • RX on

...does behave differently now. I've played for an hour or so. Just like before, temps shoot up rapidly, even in the game menu it's already at 80C. So the card is running just as hot, just as fast as before.

However, cooling has changed. The normal fans are working quite hard to keep it around 80-84C and I've not encountered the jet engine mode, not once. So far, that is.

Whilst this hopefully solves the maddening noise, it comes at a great expense of performance. The above settings now result in 30-60fps only in-game. Before, I'd easily hit 110-120fps with the same settings, without any crazy fans.

Going from ultra to high quality settings for BFV makes no difference. Disabling RX wins some performance, FPS is around 70-80 then.

So whilst fans seem to do a better job at keeping temps low enough, the burning question remains why this card is getting so hot so fast all of a sudden, even on mediocre loads, whilst not doing that for the past 7 months.

So whilst I appreciate the help in tuning the fans, I'd like to put emphasis on the true problem: the card is getting too hot, too fast, whereas it did not do that before. Now that cooling seems to avoid jet engine mode, I'm basically in a Ferrari that can't go over 30mph.

The card getting 80+C temps even in a game's menu, without playing at all, is a sign that something is wrong, no matter the cooling. Delivering 30-60fps only even in just high settings, is also a sign that something is wrong. I've pretty much lost half my performance, out of the blue. The screen I use (aw3418dw) is also quite useless this way.

Thoughts on why this card is suddenly getting so hot?

Thanks for responding. Please see my latest update below. After a BIOS update, I can no longer reproduce jet engine mode. However, the original question remains as to why this card maxes out in temp so quickly under mediocre loads. It did not do that before.

Another test observation: BF1, which is far lighter compared to BFV and has no RX, runs into fan panic mode after 1 minute of play, on just high settings.

I think this excludes RX specifically being a possible root cause. The card rapidly runs hot even on a mediocre load and without RX.

Update: after a longer test, I did manage to kick in jet engine mode twice.

The game session got an awful 40-70fps (opposed to earlier 110-120+ fps before this problem) and even at this 50% of performance compared to before, it cannot sustain it without overheating.

This further cements to observation that the card is running hot way too fast.

What's your gpu usage at when you have nothing running?  You could have been cryptojacked, if so, run malwarebytes.  Also, check for dust or other obstructions on the gpu's vents.

GPU usage in Windows is currently low after having left it alone for an hour. It's at 0-6%. Temperature is at 42C. Fan speed 1000 (18%). Does not look like crypto to me.

Am going to open the case and clean it out.

I opened the case. There was no dust to be seen on any chipset, just a little bit on the fans, which I cleaned.

Reconnecting the system and after booting, I managed to capture behavior quite well:

Starting out in Windows, and allowing Window to settle, temp is a reasonable 35C, fan speed 999RPM. This seems normal, as far as I know.

Starting BFV, I intentionally spend some time in just the game menu, without playing at all. Only 30 secs into the menu, temp is already at 80C, whilst effectively not doing anything. Fan speed is around 2600rpm.

Next, I joined the game. Temps are continuously in the 83-84C area with a fan speed of 3230RPM. Meanwhile, I'm not getting anything above 70FPS. Before, it would easily reach 120FPS without much effort.

Every once in a while, temp hits 85C or above. This seems to trigger emergency cooling, you can clearly see two of such spikes above, where fan speed peaks into 57777 RPM. Temps then briefly drop to 50-60C yet then immediately rise again, until the next emergency cooling event.

So to sum up troubleshooting so far:

  • The BIOS update did not help, I initially thought it at least changed cooling, but after longer testing it turns out the original problem is as before
  • The actual load on the system seems to hardly matter: high or ultra, with or without RX, BFV or the far lighter BF1...the system runs hot very fast in any of these scenarios where it did not do this before.
  • Cleaning the system had no effect, as it wasn't dirty.

Your drop in frames per second, together with the crazy fan noise, is indication of the GPU throttling. You did mention that Heaven isn't giving you this problem but could it be that the render settings on it aren't pushing the card into the range where it's truly loaded hence hot? What are the settings for it?

How about other synthetic benchmarks like Furmark and Time Spy? Sorry if you have written about this before and I may have missed it.

Is the air blowing out of your card from the back of the chassis hot or cool? If it is cool, it could be that the thermal contact between your GPU die and the heatsink has been compromised. Are you familiar with dismantling the GPU shroud and doing a re-paste? I think Dell may void your warranty on this so please check with them first.

I have the same problem as well, although my GPU is a RTX 2080. I experience the same "jet engine mode" when my GPU hits a temp of 80 or 81. I have tried everything, fan curves, upping the speed with afterburner, and even cleaning it. After all my efforts the noise still occurs. Anyone find any new fixes?

  • Intel i7-8700 CP // 3.20GHz
  • 16 GB RAM
  • GeForce RTX 2080

p.s. Im just tryna play games again man this issue has been happening for about 3 moths now

my GPU is a RTX 2080. I experience the same "jet engine mode" when my GPU hits a temp of 80 or 81.

I'm assuming it is one of the Aurora's case fans that you are talking about (because AfterBurner should take care of any GPU fans ).

First, switch Thermal-Controller to Manual, then setup a reasonable uphill curve. You can even peak-it at 80% if you want.

Then, set the sensor that it follows to the main processor (yes, the CPU).

That should take-care of it. Works for me on the Aurora-R6.

I'm thankful for everyone suggesting these solutions that try to reduce temperatures, but that's not a real solution to my problem.

My question is why this card gets so hot in the first place. It didn't do that before, under the same load. This card runs 83C even just in the BFV menu, without even playing. At settings "High" and RTX off.

Sure I can shut down even more things, but that's not a solution. When I bought it, this card ran 100+ FPS 1440P at ultra with RTX ON, without ever going into jet engine mode.

That's the point of this expensive card, to reach that level of performance. I still don't understand how out of the blue, from one day to the other, this card basically performs 50% less. I didn't change anything.

I want to know the root cause of this vast difference that came from nowhere.

Did you ever find the root cause of the issue or how to resolve it. My card is having similar issue with the fan going crazy, exact same sound and everything. I also got my computer about 7 months ago. (August).

I have the exact same issue with the fans on load. It gets up to 82-84 really quickly and the fans sound just like this video. Luckily, I purchased the extended warranty and home service for 3 years, so Dell is sending new parts to replace the liquid cooling and GPU  

I didn’t have this issue when I first purchased the machine. It only started acting up after about 10 months

Everyone complained that the fans sounded like a jet engine taking off constantly, so they patched the fan curves to be less aggressive, so now it heats up quickly and goes into bios override over-drive, drops down to the auto curve, heats up, bios override, over and over.
