Question about upgrades and fresh install...

So a friend is sending me their R6 which will transfer existing warranty up till May of 2021...

Once they transfer over all the files from the R6 to their new R11, they want to do a fresh install so that the drive is wiped of any of their personal information... what is the process to do this?

And are you allowed to install your own hardware or will it affect the warranty? Like extra SSD's... soundcard, memory and maybe a new video card in the future once the new 3080's are dropped.

Identify product to be transferred

You may request a warranty and/or ownership transfer if you:

  • Purchased or received a new or used Dell product
  • Sold or given away your Dell product
  • Moved to another country and need coverage in that region
  • Request permanent address change for your Dell product with a service tag
  • Own a product manufactured by a company that Dell has recently acquired

Note: Dell EMC has automated the service tag/system ownership transfer process for Businesses and Consumers.

Here's what you will need

  • Service Tag of product to be transferred
  • Name and zip code used at time of purchase
  • Name and address warranty is being transferred to

You can download the win 10 install media directly from Microsoft for free and burn to your new drive. Your OEM license will carry over, it's stored on the mobo.

Stored on the mobo? So what happens during the install process when you need to input your product key? Is it put in their automatically by reading it from the mobo or something? And what about warrenty... is that affected by installing your own hardware?

Click "Enter it Later".

During First-Time-Setup ... motherboard's OEM key will be automatically used. It will Activate after connecting to the Internet.
