Alienware 18 Power supply

I have the new 18 with following specs

4900mq

780m sli

300w power supply

16gb ram (stock)

Problem is when moving from one page to the next, either between internet pages, metro to desktop or vice versa, or different apps or programs there is a significant drop in brightness for a few moments.  The workstation is always plugged in, on U3 cooling pad, and free of any obstruction.  Its less than a month old since I received it but I still checked and no dust problems.  I have verified that all drivers are up to date.  I went to power supply and have all settings set to max performance and brightness all the way up.  I've reinstalled the operating system and still issues persist.  I've also had problems while gamming where the system stutters in game or starts slowing up during the game.  I've monitored the temps while this is going on and its hitting 85-90c and it does not appear the fans are spinning on the CPU side.  The GPU temps are a bit better usually around 75-80c under load but on occasion hitting 85-90c as well.  I'm not sure if the high temps are causing the behavior and this also does not appear to be internet related as its happening when not playing multiplayer games as well as multiplayer games.  Another note is I've been steady hitting about 3-4 BSOD everyday since I've had the machine.  Most are from page fault in non page area, irql_not_less_or_equal as well as others.  I try to check them and resolve the issue on my own but I have not found working resolutions.  I gotta get the BSOD's to stop and the stuttering or lagging in game issues are a big worry.  The upper left corner of the keyboard (CPU) is too hot to touch when gaming.  The decrease in brightness when changing apps or pages is a concern and the decreased performance in offline as well as online gaming is also an issue.  Any suggestions?

Looking for any suggestions or help here.  The BSOD have got to stop as well as the issue with the heat.  The fans are not even on at these temps.

Milena,

Thanks for the reply.  The power settings are set to high performance and all options in the power settings are on 'high' settings.  Nothing is set to dim or sleep and brightness is turned all the way up.  It happens when its plugged in.  I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but the system still dims when switching apps or web pages. 

Ive used HWinfo64 and XTU to monitor temps. 

I reply with the bug codes once im off work.

Does the change in the brightness happen if you put the power settings to high performance, and does it happen regardless the ac adapter is connected or disconnected?

Which tools are you using to monitor the temperatures of the CPU and the GPU?

Approx 27 or so since I first turned this thing on 12/13/13 (black friday???).  I have reinstalled the OS around the 12/21/13 mark.  When reinstalling the OS I followed the driver install order from this site and made sure all drivers were the latest releases.

The system is having a lot of blue screens and they are all different, I would recommend you to reinstall windows from scratch following the instructions on this article

The CPU and GPU fans not running and overheating of the CPU especially is a known issue on the Alienware 18. Many are experiencing issues with this and we anticipate that an updated BIOS/EC will soon be released to resolve that dilemma. The upper left corner is the primary video card. The CPU is in the center rear of the chassis in line with the Alienware logo at the bottom of the display bezel. This is a separate issue from the BSOD problems.

The bug check codes in the list of dump files that you are seeing are possible indicators of one or more defective memory modules or a rogue driver. No specific driver is referenced that I noticed looking through what you posted, which further suggests a potential memory problem. Are you running the original memory or an aftermarket upgrade? 

Try running the ePSA test by pressing F12 at POST and selecting the diagnostic tool. Make note of any errors if any are reported and then contact Alienware tech support with that information. Please let us know what you find out.

Fox thanks for the reply.  I am aware of the fan table issues and of your hard work getting the word out to others who may be experiencing this issue.  I have previously voted and replied in all the idea storms and forums that you have listed elsewhere.  I want to thank-you again for being a leading voice for the community on this issue and others.

I'm running stock memory.  I've run the ePSA test previously and no issues.  I'll pull the sticks like you mentioned and see if the errors continue.  I originally wanted to put 3rd party memory in there from a previous R4 I had but my understanding is that the 18 will only take 1.35v and the model I was going to swap with are 1.5v.  I have not swapped yet and don't plan too.  

I will reply back after testing.

This kind of issue can be difficult to troubleshoot. I hope it is a bad RAM stick, because that will be fairly simple to isolate. Try removing all 4 memory modules and use one module at a time in the bottom slot. If one still has a BSOD, try another one, so on. If you still have a BSOD with all 4 modules installed one at a time, then it must be something else. Not likely 4 sticks would be bad.

Have you tried resetting BIOS defaults already? There could be something corrupted (there are hidden menus that we cannot access) that setting defaults might clear.

Another thing you might try is removing your WiFi card, or disabling in Device Manager, to see if that device is the offender. There have been a ton of problems with wireless cards from Broadcom and Killer in the past couple of years, worse recently since the release of Window 8 for some reason.

No, doing a power drain certainly would not hurt. What I am referring to is entering the BIOS, going to the exit menu and selecting the option to set BIOS defaults.

I have reinstalled windows from scratch and reinstalled drivers from dell's website.  I continue to have the BSOD's.  This has been going on since I got the machine.  All hardware is stock.  I did the ePSA test with no errors.

By BIOS reset do you mean power drain?  If so then no I have not tried that yet.  I also didn't do the tests with one stick at a time with the RAM yet but I may have to.  I spent most Sunday running the ePSA test and reinstalling windows 7 along with dealing with the 3ft of snow we got here on the west coast of MI.  I haven't popped off the keyboard on the 18 yet to get at the WI-FI card or other 2 sticks of RAM.  From reading the manual it looks like it just snaps off from the back?  I worked extensivley on the 17r3 and r4 but not the 18 yet.

Ahh, yes I did the return to default settings.  I had not previously made any changes to BIOS though.  Eitherway I just did the return to optimal defaults just to say I did.
