Alienware Alpha Desktop Mode - Black Screen

In the transition to the Alienware Hivemind interface, I had to reset my Alpha using the memory stick included in the package. After waiting a few months I updated my Alpha to Hivemind, and it worked, but with a few issues. The main issue is that I cannot access desktop mode, or normal windows 8. This just comes up with a black screen. I can still see and move my cursor, and use CTRL-ALT-DEL to exit this screen.

Another issue is a bit of a non-issue, but it may come of use. When logging in (which is done automatically) it comes up with "Incorrect Password", but by not typing in a password, and just hitting enter, it logs in normally.

I would be very grateful if someone knows anything about this - no one else on the forums I've been on has had a similar issue.

Thanks.

Hello,

When you get the black screen, try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete, look for the Sign Out option and click on it. This should take you to the initial screen where it shows the options for Desktop Mode and Console Mode, select Desktop mode and it should boot normally into the desktop. If it makes it to the desktop, reinstall the Hivemind Interface software. Let us know how it goes.

When I sign out via ctrl-alt-delete, I get the login screen with two options. One reads Alpha Console, which leads to console mode, and the other has my full name, which I assume is my microsoft account and should lead to desktop mode. Clicking this leads me to the exact same black screen.

Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem, at first the console did this and I could log out and into the desktop but as of yesterday I get the black screen on the desktop as well. I would like to do a complete recovery but cannot access anything. Help!

Hi,

When you get to the login screen, hold the right shift button and press the restart button. Does this take you to the recovery options?

Thanks for the reply, I was able to use another work around from the community using the task manager and accessing the desktop through explorer.exe. I have done a total reset and seems to be working fine. Is there some way to avoid this in the future, was it something I did ?

Hi,

I don't think you could have done anything to cause this unless you disabled a setting in the Hivemind Interface services or if you deleted anything related to the Hivemind Interface software. I've seen similar issues in the past and usually that is what causes them. I’m glad you were able to fix it.
