Alienware M17x-r2 - LCD not turning on
Hi I opened up the laptop using the service manual to clean out the heatsinks for the GPU and the CPU. I also removed and reapplied thermal paste. I remove the display cable and camera cable from the motherboard. I reassembled everything and everything seems to be running fine, but I was using an external monitor via HDMI only. I just opened the laptop screen but it wouldn't turn on. The webcam still seems to work. I took it apart and reseated the display cable 3 or 4 times, but no luck. External screen is working fine, but it wont detect the laptop screen. any suggestions what I could try? I don't think it came apart behind the LCD screen. I never took off the screen or pulsed at the cables to make it come loose. Thanks.

It's either the cable or the LCD. There's no way to know for sure which one it is until at least one of them is replaced.

Hi!
If the external video works fine, it's definitively an LCD issue. It could be a defective LCD, but since you mentioned that the webcam is still working it sounds more like there could still be a loose cable or connection.
I know you've checked several times, but I recommend you go through the disassembly videos (Part 1 and Part 2) and make sure you didn't miss anything.

Thanks. Will dig into the back of the lcd and see if something came loose. The LCD used to work when i would open the laptop. It stays close most of the time since i am using an external dell 24".
On a side note, can i get part numbers for the CPU fan and the gpu1 fan please. I may decide to change them. I think they run in the $50s. Yikes!

no luck, took it apart 2 times and checked everything. nothing behind the LCD was loose. everything worked fine before. could the cable have been damaged? its not a flat cable and couldnt have bent. its sleeved, but dont know what it looks like from inside. i didnt bend any wires or cables sufficiently to have caused a crease or damage.
