I recently purchased a used 2011 Alienware M17xR3. I bought it without the sound working, hoping I could find an easy fix, such as a driver or bios update. Regardless, I haven't been able to figure out why the sound does not work. I even opened the palmrest to make sure the speakers were still in fact plugged into the board. When I open audio devices, the best I can get is that there are three hdmi devices that are 'disconnected', and if I uncheck the option, it will say there is no audio device installed. Services are running though, and I made sure all the requisites are running also, thus the troubleshooter is of no help. I've tried the dell onboard diagnostics, which of course audio fails because when the test comes to the interactive part, I cannot do anything, such as move the options or anything. The pre-boot test says everything is working fine. I need some help with this issue before I have to resort to getting a new motherboard. This system has the Klipsch speakers, and regardless, I've never heard of an integrated sound device just stop working on a laptop before, though im sure it is possible. Any advice would be appreciated, and Ill post some specs from autopsy for gen comp component info.

I've read a about a few instances with the s/pdif connection issue with a stuck switch. I'm assuming this is a good possibility of whats going on. Curious if its worth breaking down the system to attempt to 'unstick' this switch. One fear is ruining the MB altogether. Any advice?

Is recovering it back to factory specs an option -- then seeing if the problem still persists -- that is what I'd do before removing components . Good luck to ya .
