Area51 Active Venting Issue (Probably an easy fix)

My area51 is working great, but I'm having one issue which I've seemed to of had since I got the system, it just seems slightly worse this weekend.

Basicly one of the active vents are slow to respond (Third one in from the front), and a new problem which only just started occuring is that it makes a clicking noise when they all close, sometimes almost three to four times before it stops. The fin in question is also a little bit stiff when you try to move it with your hand unlike the other ones.

You can see a video which I've made of this problem below. When i open the right side panel where the hard drives are this problem doesn't occur, almost as if the fins are a little to tight on one side or the door is rubbing against it.

Perhaps there is a guide to re seat them? I don't want a tech to come anywhere near my computer as this seems like a really easy fix and I've had issues with them before. I've considered unscrewing them and putting them back in but I'm not sure if that will resolve it. I do see the screws for them underneath it right under the plastic casing. Has anyone had this issue before or has this been heard of?

Is there also perhaps a way to relinquish control from active venting? Even with keep vent position at 50% it still moves the vents without my permission at random. I would rather them be open permanantly.

Call Dell and have them replaced. You can fix it yourself but it's a pain and I don't know if you are able to do it.

It is rubbing on the side and needs to be bent just a little without breaking it and then lubed.

To keep them open all the time go into ACC and set the Keep AT THIS Position on the fuly open. Then uncheck the flare vents and fans on start.

I'm not calling Dell. But I will take a do it yourself guide.

It's probably rubbing slightly on the right side, and I can see where the connectors are so I will probably just do it myself. And the last part of your post doesn't work, because it still shuts the vents when the computer turns off.

jives12345,

I think Morblore wrote this up? I know one of the Alienware guys did.

* The harddrive cover on the left side of the machine could be clamping/rubbing the 3rd vent so it will not move smoothly. Check it
* Take out the two plastics on both sides of the top vents and put a little grease or vasoline on the hinges and moving parts
* Check the alignment of the vents and make sure they are free of other parts of the chassis. Fixed by taking off the sides and pulling the vent hinge out just a little to stop it from rubbing the side of the system
* To check to see if the chassis doors are the cause, open up both side panel doors and try turning on the system or activating the venting system to see if it gets stuck again. One customer says, I could see the 3rd vent rubbing against the top of the right door panel (HDD Access Door). It might be the same thing happening to yours
