Aurora R6 selected boot device failed

Yesterday I did a fresh install of Windows 10 (with creators update) on the m.2 nvme drive in my Aurora R6. Before the installation I changed the SATA mode from 'RAID on' to 'AHCI', because I want to run Linux on a 2.5 inch ssd. The installation of windows 10 went well and after the installation I installed the latest updates and driver software (from Dell).
After shutting down and rebooting I now get the following message (just after the Alienware logo):
Selected boot device failed

'Window boot manager' is the first option in the UEFI boot order and manually selecting 'windows boot manager' in the one-time boot menu results in the same error message.

Interestingly I can still boot windows 10 by using the installation media:
On boot press F12 -> installation USB -> recovery -> continue to windows

I did not expect that changing the SATA mode to AHCI would effect a pcie nvme ssd.

Online I found some suggestions including registry fixes and booting in safe mode, but no success, I still get the boot device failed message when booting normally.

Some BIOS information:
Version 1.0.4
UEFI with secure boot disabled
SATA mode: AHCI

Does anyone have any experience with booting windows 10 from a m.2 nvme ssd with SATA mode set to AHCI? Is it a driver issue or is this not supported by the BIOS or mobo or something else?

By the way, I'm also seeing the NVMe SSD at 0GB when I switch to AHCI mode.

So, now we know it happens with both SK Hynix and Samsung drives.

That points to a problem with the Aurora-R6 itself, not the M.2 NVMe SSD drives.

So I emailed tech support, and was told "unfortunately there is no BIOS update or modification ETA for that specific matter as we do not support dual boot on these machines". Which struck me as an odd thing to say--I mean, there's a bug in their BIOS causing the NVMe drive to show as 0GB, whether or not I'm trying to dual boot, right? (In fact, I'm trying to boot Linux off my HDD, so technically I don't even need the SSD to boot, but for whatever reason this "0 gig" issue causes the boot to fail anyway.)

I pointed this out in my reply and was told: "For that specific matter there is a work around, basically you set the configuration on AHCI, boot from the installation drive until you reach the partition select screen, where you need to load the driver Intel Rapid Storage Technology, that will show the full partition ... In your particular situation, the problem is that this process works for Windows only as the driver is for Windows."

So it sounds like my only option for dual booting this thing is to use a non-NVMe SSD?  Like this one: Amazon.com: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM): Computers & Accessories

Can anyone confirm that SATA SSDs don't have this same AHCI problem? (It sounds like they don't.)

Thanks everyone for all your help!

Thanks--I decided to just order a SATA SSD. On the bright side, I can get 1TB of space for the cost of 500GB on the Evo 960 ...

1. Right. This is the core problem.

2. I don't think this works. Even after you try to load Intel-RST F6-Floppy driver, (at beginning of Windows clean install) ... it still doesn't work because BIOS still thinks disk is 0gb. Only way we would could get it to work (in the Windows-install focused threads) , was to leave setting as RAID. Not so coincidentally, this is how Dell's Windows-10 machines are shipped (since this is the only way it works).

I included all these points (and forum links) in the email ... including the fact that it works differently on Aurora-R5. Alienware Engineering has only recently been notified of this problem, so I think it's going to take a while to get it fixed.

Samsungs website recommends using the NVMe SSD in AHCI mode!

Right.

And I personally think this issue would get more traction with Dell if you stuck to how it affects conventional Windows-10/64bit installs ... since that is the OS that the machines shipped with.

By the way, I was able to get AHCI to work with the Samsung Evo 850, but only after following the steps below. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone else who foolishly tries to dual-boot Linux on their Alienware Aurora R6. (Linux can't see the hard drives in "raid" mode, they have to be in "AHCI" mode.)

Anyway, I now have a working dual-boot system. Many thanks to the community!

Nothing but issues trying to use M.2 NVME SSD.  You cannot change it from RAID.  The BIOS Firmware needs to be updated.  Dell's support hasn't a clue, nor care.  It's about selling the machines, that's all.

Confirmed. I loaded the OS on a 850 Pro (in ACHI mode) while waiting for my 960 Pro to arrive. Took about a week...

It doesn't work. It works until the machine reboots and then the message "Boot Device Failure" appears on a black screen. At that point you are dead in the water.

The "Intel-RST F6-Floppy driver" does not work. Don't waist your time!

Another Aurora R6 here frustrated by the lack of compatibility with the 960 Evo.

The recent BIOS update only provided some new Intel functionality, no fix for this issue.

‌ Dell update the aurora r6 bios to 1.0.7, And the problem is in AHCI mode, the 960 evo shows -> 960 EVO 250GB - (S4) 185275945GB, And with the recover image from dell, It can be installed but cannot boot, I think, the AHCI mode works, but some problems with the driver of samsung SSD.
