CCC / AMD overdrive / Manual fan / screen jitters /

I don't have the need to overclock, but on the CCC/performance/amd overdrive, you can adjust the the GPU fan speed manually if you enable the amd overdrive. I wanted to see what effect this would have on the temp of the GPU so I enabled the overdrive. I didn't touch the clock or memory settings. The GPU temp was 53-54C before manually adjusting the fan and by only setting 25% the GPU temp dropped to 35 degrees. That's 18-19C cooler and there was no increase in fan sound. You can't tell what speed the fan was at in the auto mode but the fan has never had to go above the 25% based on the temp's I've observed in the past. The problem however is that with the overdrive enabled two of my three displays constantly flicker. As soon as I uncheck the overdrive the screens work fine. I never changed any settings other than the fan so what could be causing this? Thanks

That's what I did.

The fan control doesn't work unless OD is enabled. I did not change any OD settings, they remained factory set, however I get the screen jitters on the two non primary displays whenever OD is checked. When I uncheck OD the screens return to normal and the manual fan option doesn't work.

Regardless, I am amazed at how much cooler the 5870 is with just an added six percent fan speed. It cooled almost 20C and there was no noticeable increase in fan speed noise.

So, first, you un-lock the lock icon at the top. Then, only check-mark "Enable Manual Fan Control", but leave "Enable ATI OverDrive" un-check-marked.

Is that what you did, or did you inadvertently have OverDrive (and therefore some OC) enabled?

Hmm ... just tried it and the Manual Fan Control doesn't seem to take effect unless  "Enable ATI OverDrive" is also selected. I'm running Dell CCC 10.7 . That appears to be a bug. As a work-around, if I wanted Manual Fan Control, but not any Over-Clock ... I would select both, but set Overdrive (OC) to 850Mhz & 1200Mhz (which is the same as the stock clocks for my 5870).
