Can the Alienware Aurora R4 SLI 2 GTX 580's?

On the Aurora R4 pages it says:

"Stunning graphics for your games: Achieve game-winning perofrmance from your graphics - the Aurora can support dual graphics cards up to 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6950"

But can the Alienware Aurora R4 support SLI with 2 GTX 580's?

Hope so man I here 580s use a lot of power. Don't know if the psu could handle two. I got me two 7970s coming in the mail I think system should run those. But you prob want nvidia only right.

Looks like it might work...

Might need to add a PS booster if amps on the 12v isn't enough. Heat from two 580s in an Aurora will likely be the bigger problem.

What do you mean the heat from the two 580's would likely be the bigger problem?

Would they fit inside the motherboard in the first place that, i'm not sure.

You should probably get one of them kilowatt an hour machines you plug up to your outlet to see your total wattage used and see from there if u think u could add another.

The cards in sli or crossfire in the aurora system sit very close to eachother pretty Much ontop of each other there was a pic online where some guy could bearly fit 3 credit cards between them. 580s are already pretty hot alone.  Pretty sure there gots to be someway you can mod it to cool them down but I'm still new to the aurora. Mine ships 2/23/12 my 2 7970s ship 2/2/12 idk maybe get a 580 with custom cooling with it. It might work.

How could I tell if the heat is too much?

Your whole room will heats up, even when your computer is idling, but i doubt an Aurora can fit 2 gtx 580 running in sli with custom heat sink (for liquid cooling, it might work) I am currently running gtx 580 sli with custom heat sink and 2 is the most i can fit into an Area 51 so yeah... from my perspective it is a must to have a custom cooling with high end graphic cards. otherwise your room will be like an oven.

Would you guys recommend I sell the GTX 580 and I go for the GTX 590 instead?

I have heard the GTX 590 has had compatiabilty issue with some games, with the drivers.

The R4 can handle Dual 7970s so the answer is most definitly YES!  The 850watt PSU will handle it with 100watt to spare.

Computer arrived on Thursday, 8 days before estimated delivery :)

Anyway, I asked a guy on twitter "askrevatdell" about SLIing two GTX 580's and whether it will work, and according to him, yes.

Does anyone on this forum have SLI 580's?

(BTW my Aurora R4 has ALX, where the top of the tower opens up and cools the computer, if that has an effect on the heating situation.)

But does SLI GTX 580 generate more heat than dual 7970's?

All I can see is 850 might be cutting it too close. Youd be safer with a 1000watt . Sorry I really dont look at Nvidia cards these days.

I've seen it posted in a couple of users sigs. Try searching Forum. Maybe those users will post here so you will know for sure. Obviously, it will be "cutting it close". Now, whether you can successfully SLI a Dell OEM 580 and a retail 580 is a different question.

Anyway, here is one. You might want to message him and make sure he wasn't also using a PS-Booster.
