Fan speeds and up and slows down while computer sits idle
I have BIOS version A07 which was supposed to have fixed this problem. But I still have the same issue. Any suggestions? I have alienware X51 bought on November 12 2012, running windows 7 64 bit.

Including the video card, I think there are 3 fans and 2 controllers.
At a pre-determined temp., they all speed up to the next minor level. Sounds like your idle temp is right on the edge of next level.
You can run this:

Apple desktops work basically the same way.

Which fan ?
Fan speed is determined by real-time cooling requirements ... not current usage (idle, etc.).

I am not sure which fan. How many fans are there in an X51 machine? All I know is that there is a fan noise that accelerates and decelerates with regularity within less than 15 seconds. But I am not running any applications. The system is just sitting idle. I guess the fan is related to CPU usage is it not? The fan just keeps on alternating between slow speed and fast speed within miniscule incuments of time. I figure if I am not going something that would heat up the CPU the fan should be running very quietly at an even pace. Or amy I wrong in my assumption? Is this the way this machine normally operates? Thank you for your response. I am Mac person. THis is my first pc. any assistance woudkl be appreciated.
