Hi nmushkin, our engineering department has not tested Linux in the Alienware systems since the only operating system we support is Windows; therefore we don’t have information regarding whether the command center (which is the software in charge of controlling the lights) will work or not after doing this change.

Will the actual system work...not just the command center?

It should (it's really just a normal laptop).

I would probably dual-boot it.

IRC, there was a Linux project to get MIO-Board/Command Center working ... but I don't remember if it was for the real desktop MIO-Board or just the "circuit" in AW laptops.

Since our engineering department has not tested Linux in Alienware systems, there's no way for us to know how will it perform. Most likely it will work fine but there's nothing certain

Here's a forum I found where this same topic is being discussed by other customers, maybe you'll find useful information there.

Which version of the m14x currently ships when you customize and buy one? R1 or r2?

R2 if your on the Dell Sales page. No idea if your on the Dell Outlet page. You would have to look at the CPUs on the Outlet page to see if they are 3rd generation.

Sorry to repeat my question, but has anyone ever tried out pyalienfx on an alienware laptop or more specifically on an m14x r2? also if anyone has any ideas on the functionality of this driver with the m14x.

thanks

Google it code.google.com/.../SupportedComputer  there is a comment 4 hours ago saying he used it with his M14x, you'd be better asking on a Linux Forum or a Dedicated Alienware Forum.

Without sounding like an idiot, this isn't the best forum to ask about unsupported mods, NBR or AA or one of the Linux Alienware forums be better.

I've been around for 6 months or so, and the 2 threads are the only real mentions of anything serious *nix wise, so my guess if you'll get no real help other than sending you elsewhere, sorry just trying to save you time :)

Hello,

I bought a refurbished Alienware M14x R2, and the first thing I did is install Ubuntu 12.04 on it. After install all the updates, Ubuntu was able to install proprietary drivers from Nvidia and other manufactures. The only thing that I could not get to work is the sound card. I believe the M14x R2 uses Creative Recon3di sound card, and it uses a fairly new engine (correct me if I'm wrong here). There isn't any ALSA support for this sound card yet, but I've read that it will come in Linux kernel 3.5 (again, correct me if I'm wrong). However, I can hear sound through HDMI because it uses the Intel HD 4000 GPU's audio. If you can live without sound, you can definitely install Ubuntu (or other versions of Linux) on your laptop.

Hope this helps. :)

Yep. I have successfully installed (and use everyday) Ubuntu 12.04 and Linux Mint 13 without any problems. All hardware afaik works without hitches. Once the lights are set in Windows, they continue to work in Linux. If you want to control them from Linux, try pyalienfx
