it is pending on budget... and current setup...
on ebay video card is usually in 5-600US range.. then new heatsink for proper heat dispersal for another 50 bucks US
cpu can vary but usually a few hundred US
can change ram.... fairly cheap
solid state hard drive is biggest improvement u can do
what is current system specs? and budget..

aye the good ol R1 .... your best bet would be a Q9000 or 9100 etc.. quad core
video might be able to pick up a GTX280M cheap ....
ram is fine ....
a solid state drive would benefit greatly to that but so would a quad core ..... but 400 wont get much

I would recommend download and viewing the user manual. The usermanual will have a listing of all possible GPUs and CPUs compatible up the time of manufacture.
What version of m17x is it? r1, r2, r3, r4?
Generally speaking, each series of m17x has compatibility with that years slection of mobile CPU/GPU. For example, the m17x r3 is compatible with all 500 series mobile nvidia GPUs, whereas the r4 is compatible with all 600 series mobile nvidia gpus.
