Optical drive only reading CDs not DVDs
Hello Alienware.
I getting the following issue with my m17x r4 . Up until recently my optical drive was doing just fine reading and writing but I tried a factory reset using the DVDs provided and it discovered that the optical drive does not read any DVDs at all (tried with burnt , media etc.) I have tried every solution I found given on this forum reading similar issues with other models(flashing the Bios , reinstalling the drivers , software updates)
Could you offer any other solutions or does the drive needs replacing.

You may have a spec of dust on one of the lasers (DVD laser) preventing it from reading DVDs but the laser CD is fine. A lens cleaning CD will sort things out in this case:
Otherwise the DVD laser has failed. In some cases firmware updates can do this (I had this problem with an Inspiron 1300 several years ago) and in other cases it can be something else. If the laser has failed the optical drive needs replaced.
