Steam machine flashing yellow lights
I have had an I7 alienware steam machine for about 7 months. It has intermittently been unable to boot up, and when this happens the alien head logo blinks yellow five times. I have tried power drains, and they work 50 percent of the time. I have reset the CMOS battery a few times, and that works for a couple of days, but then it happens again. I have left the power cord unplugged when I am not using it, and that worked for awhile, but the yellow lights keep showing up randomly. Should I just send it in? Or am I missing something?

Same exact problem as you. I purchased ours for my son as a Christmas present, after he used it for a day or two we had problems with it right from the get-go. Yellow light flashes five times, unit will not power on. Opened up a ticket with alienware and they had us ship it into their service depot. Got the unit back a few weeks later and it powered on. My son played it a few times and then didn't bother with it at all until this past weekend when he tried to use it for the first time in about four months. I walked into his room and noticed the alienware head is flashing yellow five times (again).
Now I don't know what to do, it feels like re-opening this ticket and trying to get it fixed is such a huge hassle at this point. I got a good deal on the system but it has been complete rubbish from day one. Seems to me they should just ship me a different rev of this model to make good on it because whatever fix they're trying on these things isn't working reliably.

Alienware Steammachine with 5 flashing yellow lights. Tried doing the CMOS battery reset as described in the forum without success. What to try next?

Did what the forum say. Same problem.
Called Dell, was asked to send it in, sent it in, got it back with a presumed motherboard replacement, still problem.
Is there any way to resolve this, or is this device designed to not work?
