System fan is running constantly and thermal controller is not working at all
I have had my Aurora for little over a year. The video card fan bearing wore out so before it could do any temperature damage I removed it. I called dell to find out exactly which card it was and it is a GTS 240 SLI nvidia card. I purchased another GT240 non sli ASUS card and thats where all the problems started.
Recently I have been getting RAM spikes when the machine is in idle. Seems I am missing some drivers but when I search for the proper ones it says they are up to date.. The driver that is missing is the Serial ATA controller. So since I had another SATA drive I went ahead and reformatted it and loaded it with the system disk that came with the machine. Now the system fan (the one that sits right above the 1 and 2 HDD) runs constanly. I manually installed all the extra features and command center would not work. I read on another forum from this site and said to uninstall and re install. I tried with no luck. I am no longer having RAM spikes with this HDD. I put in the original drive and i DO have the RAM spikes again but the thermal controller is still not working.. So this souonds liek a hardware issue right? I took my PC to a computer shop to have them run diagnostics to make sure the mother board was not fried, which it isnt... but they DID blow out my machine with compressed air.. Could this have messed up one of the sensors?
Please help!! I live in a small town where no one knows about high end computers

The missing Serial ATA controller driver is only for the External eSata port. Get the Silicon Image driver from support.dell.com . It has nothing to do with your internal hard-drives. Those run from the Intel Chipset.
Run Dell Diagnostic to check your MIO Board. The MIO-Board and Command Center software control the fans.
There is now a new version of Command Center. Uninstall the old one, reboot, and install the new one.
The fan ABOVE the hard-drives, and in-front of the video card is the "PCI Fan". If it doesn't work on "Auto", change it to Manual, then click the "arc" in the bottom corner and set it to Curve. Apply and Save.
Blowing out the machine with compressed air is fine (and usually a good idea if it's dirty). Just make sure nothing came un-plugged (maybe during shipment).
SLI is just a term used when you install two identical nVidia video cards, hook them together internally, and they work together as one.
I don't know what a "RAM Spike" is.
After you load Windows fresh, there is a certain procedure you must follow to load all the proper drivers back onto the machine (before you load your apps and games).
Install Windows-7 (64 bit) first.
Install latest Dell drivers (from support.dell.com ... for your Service Tag)
This order is important:
Intel Chipset Drivers (must be installed first)
Video Drivers
Audio Drivers (Realtek on-board or Other)
Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet (optional if using Microsoft bundled drivers instead)
eSATA Driver (SIL-Silicon Image)
Ignore driver updates from Windows Update. Drivers should some from Dell.
- Or they can come OEM manufacturer (ie. Creative for X-Fi audio card).
Install any missing Microsoft .Net Frameworks versions 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 (just Frameworks not SDKs)
- Use Microsoft Update. If you need them, they will be offered. Also get the .Net Service Packs.
- Or, see http://webtrickz.com/checking-net-framework-version-installed-on-your-windows/
Install AlienWare Command Center
The Intel Storage (RST) software is optional in a single "spinning drive" environment.
If running a RAID HDD setup or SSD it's recommended. Install Intel RST 9.6.0.1014 or newer).
Once installed, it replaces the Microsoft HDD driver and cannot be un-installed or removed.
Install Microsoft Security Essentials (or your favorite Anti-Virus/ Anti-Spyware)
Windows Firewall is handling the software firewall duties
- If not already done, put machine behind a hardware router/firewall ASAP.
Go ahead and install all the missing Important and Recommended Windows Updates.
Use Acronis (or similar) to make a complete Image Backup of your drive or partition.
Now, it should be safe to visit websites other than dell.com and microsoft.com .
- To prevent problems stick to legitimate websites.

OK what I meant by RAM Spike was the ram usage would go up to 97%. I am not running raid config i have 2 sata hdd. The secondary hdd I was using was from a previous pc I have. I didnt want to loose the programs I had saved on my primary drive. I swapped the primary with the secondary, reinstalled windows on it and am now running it as my primary hdd. However when I try to install command center it installs fine and the upgrade option pops up and I upgrade it restart the computer and i get an error message about the thermal controller and is as follows:
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

My pc also will restart usually within 5 minutes of windows booting up. Now I noticed you said the order of which I re-install the features is very important.. If you know the order to do this please share, if not where can i find this information. I looked on the dell.support site and was unable to locate the information I need.
I am about to chuck this thing out the window so please help...

That message means that the Thermal Controller (sub-app of Command Center) can not communicate with the MIO-Board via the motherboard's USB-1 port.
What color is the AlienHead in the SysTray ?
Does the MIO-Board pass tests in Dell Diagnostics?

Step 1:
I suggest you to update the graphics card driver from manufacturer website and check if it helps.
If the issue persists even after updating the driver, I suggest you to check whether the cooling fan is working fine. You can refer to the following steps to prevent the computer from overheating.
Step 2:
I would suggest you to check with the following steps to try and resolve overheating issues:
a) Clean air vents and check if air fan is working or not.
b) Use some software, then, check if your system's fan is working at right speed.
c) Do not use your notebook/laptop on a surface that block air vents.
d) Thermal pads might be burnt. Try replacing them with new one.
e) There might be some fault with the hardware. You can get it checked with professional expert.
u c k ***) Adjust power settings to your needs. Lower energy consumption will result lower heat generation.
g) Never leave operating laptop with closed lid. This always generates heat inside laptop. You may close lid only if laptop will automatically go into sleep or hibernation mode.
e l l ***) You may also try installing latest software and drivers from the manufacturer website.
