Upgrading alienware R3

Hi,

I've bought my R3 M17x Alienware laptop with i7 processor, 8 gb of ram and a GTX 560m graphic card. That GPU is outdated but still ok. Processor and ram are not.

Is there a possibility to change just the graphic card? If it is possible, I may pull 3 years on this configuration without any problems.

Thank you!

Hi,

Here is a list of the graphic cards that Dell has certified to work on the Alienware M17X R3:

  • AMD 6970M
  • AMD 6870M
  • GeForce GTX 460M
  • GeForce GTX 560M
  • GeForce GTX 580M

Regarding RAM upgrades, the most you can install on this unit would be 32GB.

Regarding the CPU, here is what has been certified.

Intel® Core™ i7:
2720QM - 2.2 GHz
2820QM - 2.3 GHz
2630QM - 2.0 GHz

Thank you for your response. I've read on some websites that with different heat sink, I can use up to GTX 780m which is a 100W card. Is that true?

Well, we’ve not seen this computer running with that video card. You can try posing on the Notebook Review and Alienware Arena where some of our users may have tried those upgrades.
