What is the biggest size video card that can fit in Alienware X51 R2 without modifications?

I'm planning on upgrading my graphics card and power supply, to a GTX 970 and a 330w PSU.  I know that the evga card with one fan will work, but since it is currently out of stock everywhere, I was wondering if a PNY card that uses a similar cooler would work. On Newegg it said that the card is 9.72 inches, but I have heard that only a 9.5 inch card will fit.

I have a 9.5" GTX 660 in the X51 which fits just fine -- I think a 9.72" card would fit as well without hitting the intake fan. You can easily confirm by measuring this .. remove your existing graphics card and measure the distance between the back of the case and the front intake fan - if it's more than 9.72" then it will fit.

I'm not entirely sure the GTX 970 will be able to fit inside that case.
You might have to do other customizations to the case in order to have it working.

The highest you would be able to go without any problems would be with an 880.

I hope this information helps you out.

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked 04G-P4-1972-KR is 9.5" long.

9.5" long - will fit if you remove the front fan grill/guard; leave the fan intact.

The EVGA GeForce GTX 660 TI FTW LE 10" long and fits fine in my X51 R1 with the metal fan guard removed... gives that extra mm or two clearance, and the fan stays to do it's job.

Review the spec.'s here.

As of this very moment they are in stock at Amazon.

This is my personal recommendation.

Will the stock power supply run this card well?. I was under the impression that 330w was very low and not enough power for most cards

145 watt TDP is perfect.

Recommended TDP for X51 R1 330w is 150 watts.

My stock OEM GPU: GTX 555 is/was 150 watts.

My current 660Ti is 150 watts.

Geforce GTX 970 TDP is 145 watts.
