aurora r5 cpu upgrade Intel Core I5-7640X

Good day!

I have bought an aurora r5 with an i5-6400 cpu and (my bad...) 450W PSU. I would like to upgrade to i5-7640X, is this possible?

I red about a BIOS update which is not available yet.

Besides that, any other complications i can expect? upgrade of PSU and liquid cooled (even without overclocking)?

Hi ‌,

Yes, due to BIOS limitations, unfortunately it will not be compatible.

No you would have to do a motherboard swap to accept the newer processor architecture. Currently the R5 uses LGA 1151 sized chips, the 7640x uses LGA 2066. I believe the mounting holes for the cpu cooler is also set on the R5 board and not adjustable (atleast mine is).

You'd need new MB and cooler but everything else should be plug and play. I'm thinking of using and Aurora R5 board in and Area 51 R2 case and use my backup LGA 1151 processor for a second gaming system for one of my kids.

I would suggest keeping the board stock and upgrading to the 6700K. I had one in a XPS 8900 (I think that was the model) and swapped in in the R5. This unlocked overclock and system is stable. You may want to consider upgrading the power supply to the 850 model and add liquid cooling. I bought the cheapest dual card system I could find and it only came with air cooler and an I3.

Thanks! Was afraid of something like that.

I will take your advice, 6700K + liquid cooling + 850W PSU it is.
