Alienware X51 R2: Can a GTX 660 pretend to be a 760?
I was having trouble with my GTX 760, getting a "Display driver has failed and been recovered" every few minutes. I tried everything I know how to do, including a factory reset, without luck. Eventually I decided to take it into a repair shop.
When I got it back, I was able to play for a couple hours before the GPU stopped working altogether. Now, in device manager, I see the message "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". Also, the card is listed as a GTX 660.
I still have my order sheet from Dell, as well as the service tag. These materials confirm that I ordered and was shipped a X51 with a GTX 760 installed.
I have physically opened the case and confirmed that the card is a 660, based on the fact that the 660 has only one six-pin power connection, while the 760 has two.
Is there any way that I was mistakenly sent a computer with a 660 installed, and that device manager would identify it as a 760?

Pull the video card and look for a 5 digit part number on a label. I cannot see how the card is being identified incorrectly by the device manager?

The GTX 760 Alienware / Dell used was the GTX 760 192-bit (OEM).
However, this GTX 760 is pretty much a re-name of the OEM GTX 660 they used earlier. It could be possible that either Windows or the Nvidia driver messed up when ID'ing your GPU. Or that the repair shop did something that they shouldn't have.
