Charger Trips when plugging in to power port

Hi

Any advice on the below is greatly appreciated.

I have an alienware m18(r2?) laptop and suddenly it has stopped working.

In a nutshell, when i plug in the charger to the device, the power transformer light blinks off and no charge reaches the computer.

As diagnostics:

  • Battery shows 4 lights when you hit the test button - so has life in it yet
  • Removed battery, held down power on device for over 30 seconds, plugged the battery back in - no change
  • Removed battery, plugged in power - same happens - the charger light switches off
  • Bought new power supply unit, no change

so right now I have a computer that wont accept power and it does not appear to be the power supply that is causing it. The light switches off the instant it is plugged - not even pushed all the way in so perhaps a short circuit somewhere.

Are there any further resets i can do without having the computer on?

What else could this be? Motherboard?

this was a very expensive treat to myself but sadly over 1 year ago so i believe now out of warranty.

any and all advice is welcomed

thanks!

We can determine that there is shortcut in the motherboard that is why the light goes off every time you plug in the ac adapter.

The only way to fix it will be with a motherboard replacement.

Thanks for the response.

What are the procedures of having this done via service with Dell please?

Also, can you tell me the normal Warranty length for a product of this calibre?

thanks

The Alienware systems normally come with one year of warranty and on regards of the procedure if you are still under warranty and you live with in US or Canada you can send me a PM with your service tag and a brief description of the problem otherwise you will need to contact the technical support site in country so they can help you.
