Why do I have to re-install GPU drivers every time I connect or disconnect my Alienware Graphics Amplifier?
Got my Alienware 13 R3 with a GTX 1060 in it and the OLED screen a few days ago.
Swap SSD, do fresh OS reload, tell windows to NOT update drivers automatically, download all latest drivers and BIOS from Dell website, install, done. Get latest GTX 1060 (Laptop) driver from nvidia. Done. Laptop runs hot, but doesn't throttle great.
Connect Alienware Graphics Amplifier with GTX 1080 Ti, restart computer, install 1080 Ti Drivers from nvidia, thing runs great, fantastic 1440p 144hz performance for a laptop CPU + Desktop GPU combo.
Later. Disconnect AGA, suddenly GTX 1060 runs VERY poorly, no restart, no settings adjust, nothing fixes it until I re-install driver, then performance is restored. Great.
Later. Re-connect AGA with 1080 Ti in it, suddenly 1080 Ti performs VERY poorly, same story, I must re-install the driver before I can get full performance from it again.
This can't possibly be the intended behavior. So what gives?

Sounds like the drivers are installing to the same folder and your computer chooses the wrong one.

Hi Muezick,
Make sure the BIOS is up to date. Then make sure you're setting up the amplifier in a proper way, just in case check this video: Alienware Graphics Amplifier: Setup - YouTube
Also, you don't need to install the 1080 Ti driver, the system should always have the 1060 driver installed. So, disconnect the amplifier, uninstall the GTX1080 Ti driver and reinstall the GTX1060 driver (version 385.41). Then set up the amplifier again.

I have the exact same problem except my Graphic card is a Titan Xp in my graphic amplifier. What is the fix? I used a driver uninstaller didn't help the new Nvidia driver 387.92 installs on the laptop runs perfect I then hookup the AMP and the GeForce Experience app is saying install new driver which i do and the system plays great. I the shutdown the Amp and i am running on the 1060 gpu and i have to download the driver again for the system to work properly. I connect the AMP and have to do the same thing again for system to work. The GEFORCE EXPERIENCE APP is it necessary to download and upgrade drivers or should I just download them from Nvidia? Help
