m14x constant beeping on boot (not seven beeps)
Hello everyone,
I was using my M14x, shut it down properly, hopped on a train and moved location. Upon arriving, I took out my laptop and tried to turn it on.
My keyboard lights turned on, but the screen remains blank, and it beeps constantly.
It does not beep 7 times in a row (as I've seen many have had this problem) but it beeps once for a second, stops, and the beeps again.
This keeps on going until I shut the laptop down (by holding down the power button).
Is this a motherboard issue as well? And has anyone else had this issue?
Also, if I do get it fixed, is it likely that I will lose all my data?
Just a note, I take extreme care with my gadgets, my laptop has not been subject to any bumps or falls. It is about 3 months old now.
Thanks.

Sounds like a dead motherboard. Give dell a call, they will have you take out the battery, hold down the power button, then try it again a few times.
Then they will replace the motherboard.

Yep, just the motherboard.
All your data is on the hard drive, when they replace the motherboard your data will be safe on the hdd. Just make sure they dont reinstall windows.

Hi kameix1, thanks for your reply.
Is it certainly a motherboard problem even without the 7 consecutive beeps? And if it's a motherboard issue, I shouldn't lose any data on my hard drive...right?
I did indeed ring Dell support, and they asked me to hold down the power button but that didn't achieve anything either.
I'm sorry for my paranoia, it's just this is my first laptop and I really love it, and I'm just hoping my Dell support experience will be a good one.
Thanks.

Checkout this Dell webpage.
http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19451762.aspx
If your still under warranty let Dell fix it, otherwise you can try a complete powerdrain.
You will need the instruction manual, here is a link.
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_alienware_laptops/alienware-m14x_service%20manual_en-us.pdf
1. Disconnect AC power and remove/disconnect battery.
2. Remove keyboard surround, keyboard and palmrest.
3. Disconnect coin cell battery
Leave the coin cell battery out for around 20-30 minutes, sit the palmrest on the base and connect the ribbon cables - Once they are connected press and hold down power button for 20 seconds.
Disconnect palmrest ribbon cables, reattach coin cell battery and re-assemble.
Bootup your laptop, you will get 5 beeps at first boot - Hold down power button to switch off and reboot.
The second reboot is hopefully the one that will fix it, if you are still getting a single beep after that then you need a new motherboard
Goodluck
