17 R4, doesn't start

Hello,

My laptop suddenly stopped working.

I removed the battery and tried again without success.

Tried to hold the push button to drain energy but nothing happens.

I removed all components one at the time, nothing.

What i see and hear if i push the start button is that  the cooling turns for a second (not 1 whole rotation) but it is like it hasn't got enough power to turn around or just that it doesnt work anymore.

Can someone advise me, i also made a recording of this.

Thank you!

Hi @Lusciusluke  welcome to this user to user discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

POST does not complete, there is no splash screen with F2 or F12 option, and the system does not Boot. There should be POST Diagnostic lights or beeps. he ac adapter's dc power cord diagnostic LED should not change before or after plugging into laptop.

From your description it seems that your battery has no charge and the ac adapter is not charging the battery. Please check the ac adapter's dc power cord diagnostic LED which should not change before or after plugging into laptop.

Laptops with battery disconnected, are designed to function as a Desktop powered by the ac adapter. Does your system function as a Desktop?

Having established that the ac adapter's power cord diagnostic LED continues to work when inserted into the laptop, the problem is seemingly the DC-IN Power socket and cable assy DP/N 0K5M1. The DC-IN socket has probably failed due to normal use and should be replaced. Watch the attached video to determine if you or a colleague have the necessary skills to install a new DC-IN Power socket and cable assy DP/N 0K5M1.

Hi @Lusciusluke  thank you for sharing an update.

(1) Please connect the 17 R4 to an external monitor.

(2) Please confirm that the ac adapter's dc cord diagnostic light remains on after plugging into the laptop's new DC-IN socket.

(3) Does the LED in the Alien Head on top of the lid work (if this is an ac adapter diagnostic connection feature on the 17 R4)?

It is odd that POST seems to start, then nothing. POST seemingly did not detect all the hardware, so it did not complete to boot and/or provide diagnostic beeps or lights.

(4) Please try reseating the RAM cards in their RAM socket and try to power on. If more than one RAM card, felt tip a number on label, try using just one RAM card. Then swap and try the other RAM card. Then repeat with the other RAM socket.

These swaps are to test if the RAM cards and/or RAM sockets are the problem. The RAM card is usually very reliable, but their connection to the RAM socket might be impaired by dust, or dirt, or debris, etc.

(5) Use a bright light to reveal if there is a seating problem with the RAM card and/or socket electrical connection.

Please share an update. Thank you.

Hi @Lusciusluke   a piece of hardware or its port may be interfering with the normal boot process of Windows.

Please disconnect all devices (not one at a time) from your computer, including:
· Mouse
· External keyboard
· External monitor(s)
· Printers,
· Scanners
· Media Card Readers
· Small Media cradles (iPod, PDA, MP3 player, etc.)
· Digital Cameras and Video Recorders
· USB storage devices
· CDs or DVDs from all optical drives

Visually check the laptop ports under a bright light for any damage, especially any shorting of terminals.

Please carefully examine the ac adapter, and cables and all of its connections. Disconnect the ac power lead from ac adapter and look for any signs of ac plug to socket poor contact, swelling, distortion. Check that the ac mains socket is fully functional, plug directly into a different mains socket. Does the ac adapter body get unusually warm or is it making an unusual noise, or does it have an unusual smell?

Please use a different Dell ac adapter, a colleague may let you borrow their Dell ac adapter with the same dc voltage output (ignore different current amperage). Try to use the Laptop with no battery connection so that it functions as a Desktop.

Please share an update. Thank you.
