Honestly, this seems like a <legalistic removed>. I bought a laptop that you are supposed to be able to upgrade but they locked it behind a special form factor. That wouldn’t be bad if they offered upgrades but you can’t even purchase the upgrades.
Agreed, I too have tried searching for this no luck, I hope there is an option to upgrade with the new 2080 super cards too if that will even be an option.
No, they have already come out and said that the new super cards will not be compatible with the Area-51m R1. They don't actually want people to upgrade over generations as they would prefer people to buy a new system.
They aren't responsible for the CPU as it comes down to Intel's socket changes. This isn't the same for GPU's though as they design the interface themselves.
I have had my Area-51m R1 (i9-9900K RTX2080) for 10 month already and I've been waiting for a possibility of upgrading. Now I am a bit disappointed. It doesn't change fact that it is my best laptop for ages.

Trying to get clarity here as well. Has Alienware said that officially?

Can the motherboards be switched out to upgrade to the new Area-51m R2?
